The Club has a unique, not-for-profit, business model whereby its surplus goes back into the community. Through its diverse range of charitable contributions, the Club seeks not only to address the needs of Hong Kong today but also to invest in the Hong Kong of tomorrow, promoting a caring and responsible society.
Over the past decade, the Club's donations of more than HK$10 billion have helped all sectors of society, in particular the young, elderly, sick and less able.
Partnerships with the Hong Kong Government, NGOs and charity groups have allowed the Club to extend its reach into many diverse areas of need. In 2004, it was presented with the "Partners in Charity Award" by The Community Chest of Hong Kong.
Among recent pioneering projects proactively initiated by the Club are CADENZA, which aims to explore new approaches to care for the elderly in the face of a rapidly ageing population; P.A.T.H.S. to Adulthood, which helps Hong Kong's adolescents develop positive beliefs and a sense of responsibility; and a new project aimed at promoting family harmony and Chinese family values. The Club is also funding the Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre, a new academy of excellence that will complement Hong Kong's staging of the 2008 Olympic equestrian events and 2009 East Asian Games.
As a socially responsible organisation, the Club believes that charity begins at home, so it strongly encourages its employees to participate in volunteering and community work themselves. In late 2005, the Club established a volunteer club, CARE@hkjc, which boasts an initial membership of some 500 volunteers.
