Moore secures stable quinella in the ATV Cup (Handicap)

17/05/2014

Trainer John Moore secured a stable quinella in the Class 1 ATV Cup (Handicap) when Rewarding Hero (116lbs) overcame a rise in class and the widest draw in barrier 11 to claim the mile contest at Sha Tin Racecourse today, Saturday, 17 May.

Moore, who was absent supervising his runners for the Group 1 races in Singapore on Sunday, provided five of the 11 runners in the HK$2 million feature, but it was the Manfred Man-trained Pleasure Gains (117lbs) who cut out the early pace, with Rewarding Hero settled towards the back of the field under Tommy Berry. After the field fanned out in the straight, the Joao Moreira-ridden Secret Sham (120lbs) tried to steal the race with 200m remaining, but Berry produced the Exceed And Excel gelding out wide and when he asked for a response, Rewarding Hero quickened up strongly to land the spoils by three quarters of a length in a time of 1m34.83s. Secret Sham held on well for second with Packing Whiz (131lbs), under Neil Callan for Caspar Fownes, making up ground along the fence to take third, a further half-length away, and Pleasure Gains staying on for fourth.

The winning jockey explained that he was very hopeful heading into the race. “I knew he was a good ride and he’d been working very well in the week, so I was glad to get the job done today,” said Berry. “When I pulled the stick through, he found another gear – he’s always shown a good turn of foot and he loves a mile.”

With this victory, Rewarding Hero became the fourth five-time winner this term following in the hoofprints of the Tony Cruz-trained Majestic Anthem, the Me Tsui-trained Divine Ten and the Caspar Fownes-trained Speedygonzalez. In addition, this win meant that John Moore extended his record-breaking prize money haul for the season to almost HK$125 million.
