HKJC announces new free-to-air television broadcasting arrangements for Horse Racing and Mark Six programmes

13/07/2015

The Hong Kong Jockey Club today (13 July) announced new broadcasting arrangements for Horse Racing and Mark Six to ensure that the public can continue to enjoy free-to-air live TV broadcasts of Horse Racing meetings and Mark Six draws as well as related Horse Racing programmes.

In the last decade, The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has been providing these programmes to local viewers via Asia Television Limited (ATV) – one of the two free-to-air TV licensees in Hong Kong. However, following the Government’s non-renewal of ATV’s Domestic Free Television Programme Service License, such arrangements cannot continue contractually beyond the current season.

The HKJC’s main objective is to ensure that the relevant TV broadcasting services for the public will not be disrupted. In the last 12 months, we have been discussing with Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), the other domestic licensed TV broadcaster about broadcasting Horse Racing and Mark Six programmes going forward.

The HKJC is therefore pleased to announce that, with effect from 1 August 2015, TVB will be granted the same full free-to-air exclusive rights to broadcast Racing and Mark Six draws. TVB will be airing these programmes on J2, a digital high definition channel with Nicam services (Cantonese and English).  J2 is a general entertainment channel offering a mix of programmes customized to adultescent who are driven, energetic and actively interested in trendy and chic culture.  According to TVB’s official information, 85% of J2 viewers are aged 25 or above. We believe this new arrangement with TVB is in the best interest of the public.

In addition to free TV broadcasts on J2, there are many other paid or online ways in which customers can access and enjoy live Racing and Mark Six draws, already available as previous season.
