Caulfield Cup - Form Comments

13/10/2016

G1 – 2400m – Turf

1

Preferment

Stayed on well when 6.9 lengths 4th to Hartnell and Jameka in 2000m G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 2 October. Won one of three starts at this distance on good ground with one of the two defeats being his 7th to Highland Reel in 2015 G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Vase. Last win was The BMW at this distance in March.

2

Our Ivanhowe

Import who ran well when 1.75 lengths 3rd to Mongolian Khan and Trip To Paris in this race last year. Has on-going feet issues but high class at best. Slow early pace against when 9.1 lengths 8th to Hartnell and Jameka in the 2000m G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 2 October. Last win was G1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in May.

3

Exospheric

Formerly with Sir Michael Stoute in England and having first run for Lee and Anthony Freedman. Not raced since August 17 when 4.5 lengths 5th to Postponed in the G1 Juddmonte International at York. Group 2 winner at this distance at Newmarket in April after running 2.3 lengths 3rd to rival Scottish, at level weights, at Ayr (2000m - Listed race).

4

Scottish

Godolphin import who ran 1.5 lengths 2nd to Highland Reel at most recent 2400m run - in the G3 Gordon Stakes at Goodwood in July 2015. Then won Listed Doonside Cup (2000m) at Ayr, beating Mutakayyef and Exospheric. Has run well all four outings this season, including latest win in the G3 Strensall Stakes (1789m) at York on 20 August.

5

Sir Isaac Newton

Ballydoyle runner who won successive 2000m races on soft ground in June before 4.5 lengths 4th to Highland Reel in the G1 King George VI Stakes at this distance in July. Since finished alongside Exospheric when 4.3 lengths 4th to Postponed in the G1 Juddmonte International before finding class too tough when 15 lengths 10th behind Almanzor in very strong renewal of the G1 Irish Champion Stakes on 10 September.

6

Tarzino

G1 Victoria Derby winner at 2500m last October. Below best in four runs this season but may have been ridden too close when 7.9 lengths 6th to Hartnell and Jameka in the 2000m G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 2 October. Rise in distance could prompt improvement.

7

Almoonqith

Won G3 Geelong Cup (2400m) and Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) late last year but unplaced seven runs since the latter victory. Weight relief here will help but has to improve on latest 6.8 lengths 8th to Almandin in G3 Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington on 2 October.

8

Sir John Hawkwood

Strong on-pace win in the G1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on 1 October at only second run since June. Form ties in with rival Real Love from Doomben G3 second at 2000m in May. Much improved in the past 12 months and has a chance.

9

Articus

German visitor trained by Andreas Wohler who won 2014 Melbourne Cup with Protectionist. Not raced at this distance but been placed at 2200m at G2 level in Germany. Won G3 Maxios Trophy (2000m) at Hanover in July before ridden too close when 2.5 lengths 5th to Elliptique in G1 Grosser Dallmayr (2000m) at Munich on 31 July.

10

Tally

Raced on pace and held on fairly when 6.5 lengths 3rd to Hartnell and Jameka in the 2000m G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 2 October (but was no match for first two, finishing 3.25 lengths behind Jameka). Finished 1.3 lengths behind Jameka when 4.6 lengths 3rd to Tavago and that filly in the G1 Australian Derby in April at only attempt this distance.

11

Jameka

In form filly who looks to be deserved favourite. Won the G3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at this track on 17 September by 3.75 lengths from Gallante. Then chased well behind the Cox Plate bound Hartnell when 3.25 lengths in the 2000m G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 2 October. Rise in distance no issue.

12

Real Love

Superior performer on firm ground and suited at distance. Ran 2 lengths 2nd to Awesome Rock in G2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at first run this season. Then failed on soft ground behind Jameka in the G3 Naturalism Stakes before strong 3 lengths win, under 128 lb, from Maurus in the G3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley on 30 September.

13

Set Square

G1 Oaks winner at three and led, against usual pattern, when failed in this race last year. Ran on well third in G2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes and 4th (to Jameka) in the G3 Naturalism Stakes at second and third runs this season. Then settled last and slow pace against when 9.9 lengths 10th to Hartnell and Jameka in the 2000m G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 2 October.

14

Big Memory

Consistent record this distance range and ran well from barrier 17 when 2.75 lengths 10th to Admire Rakti in this race two years ago. Solid effort last Saturday when nose 2nd to Assign, with Pemberley third, in the G2 Herbert Power Stakes at this course and distance.

15

Sacred Master

Ran on well when 1.6 lengths 4th to Sir John Hawkwood in G1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on 1 October. That followed G3 win in the 2200m Newcastle Cup.

16

Fanatic

New Zealand filly who won the G1 New Zealand Oaks by a nose from Sofia Rosa at her only attempt this distance, in March this year. Had just two runs since and jumps sharply in trip. Latest effort was 3.8 lengths 9th to Kawi in the G1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) at Hastings (NZ) on 17 September.

17

Pemberley

Closed late when 0.4 lengths 3rd to Assign in the G2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) here last Saturday. That followed successive wins at 1815m and 2050m in much weaker class.

18

Go Dreaming

Battled on fairly when 6 lengths 4th to Real Love in the G3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley on 30 September. Possible leader and rain affected track would help but looks out of his depth.

Reserves

19

De Little Engine

Settled well back but closing sectional times were sound when 8.3 lengths 7th to Hartnell and Jameka in the 2000m G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 2 October. Longer trip suits and could surprise especially if the ground is firm.

20

Vengeur Masque

Imported to Australia after distant 5th to Simple Verse in the 2015 G1 St Leger. Fair in three runs in this country. Latest was 3.5 lengths 4th to Almandin in the G3 Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington on 2 October. Down in the weights but up in class.
