HKIR News : Tracknotes (2) - Show a Heart in Good Shape for Hong Kong Mile (11/12/2001)

11 December 2001

Queensland trainer Barry Miller arrived in Hong Kong only last night (Monday) and was delighted to see his charge Show A Heart in fine fettle this morning as he cast his eye over the horse he'd not seen for a week.

'He looked very well. My only concern was that he changed stride abruptly at the finish of his work,' Miller said after race jockey Glen Boss partnered the horse in a strong gallop on the Sha Tin grass.

But Miller's fears were quickly allayed when he spoke to Boss immediately after the work. 'Nothing to worry about, ' Boss explained, 'the horse just spotted a bare patch on the track and hurdled it. He's fine and he felt just terrific underneath me.'

Show A Heart has won three of his four starts at 1600 metres and for that reason alone ought not be underestimated on Sunday. Two of those three wins have been at Group one level.

In Australia, he is regarded as a superior performer on soft ground but his trainer believes that is not the case. 'Obviously he is very good with some cut in the track. His record shows that but I am absolutely sure he's every bit as good on firm ground,' Miller said.

Show A Heart has been in the care of John Hughes since arriving in Hong Kong and has done well despite the change of environment.

'He's a tough horse. Not much worries him, ' Miller said, 'he had a race at home on December 1 and then flew to Hong Kong and lost only 11 kilograms which is amazing.

'He just does so well all the time. He eats twice as much as any other horse I've ever trained so he can get away on you if you're not careful. But he looks good to me at the moment and he'll have another very solid hitout on Friday morning which should have him spot-on.'

Show A Heart missed a start in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes on the final day of the VRC Melbourne Cup carnival when he was running a temperature. 'That was a little setback for us but the horse is fine now,' Miller said.

'He did need to have a race before coming here and that's why we ran him at Caulfield just before he made the trip,' Miller said. That race was over 1440 metres at Caulfield in Melbourne on December 1. Show A Heart carried 61 kilograms and was beaten a nose by Brodance to whom he conceded nine kilograms.
