HKIR News : Tracknotes (4) - Godolphin trio take eye on turf (12/12/2001)

12 December 2001

GODOLPHIN'S three-strong team of China Visit, Ekraar and Tobougg were given their first chance to stretch out on grass at Sha Tin this morning. All three did a piece of light work over a circuit of the track and looked bright and happy in their work, especially Tobougg, who moved well and looked magnificent.

International Cup fancy, Tobougg, a top Group 1-winning juvenile before he was switched to Godolphin, has had a light campaign this season. He put in a career best performance when, as second string of the two Godolphin horses for the Group One Champion Stakes at Newmarket in October, he failed narrowly to hold the top class colt, Nayef.

Frankie Dettori, who will ride all three horses at Sha Tin on Sunday, chose to ride Best Of The Bests at Newmarket, leaving Kevin Darley to take the ride. Darley said today: "Tobougg lost his way this season before Newmarket. Simon Crisford (Godolphin's Manager) told me to keep him up with the pace that day and he raced really well for me, just being beaten by a slightly better horse on the occasion. 2000 metres is certainly his trip but my only worry here for him is that this Sha Tin track might be a little bit sharp for him."

China Visit, who will line up for the Mile, has come to Sha Tin fresh from two fine performances at Longchamp in October. He took the 1600-metre Group 2 Prix Du Rond-Point from the great Jim And Tonic before finding fellow Mile opponent, Mount Abu, two lengths too good for him over 1400 metres in the Group 1 Prix de La Foret a week later.

Ekraar, a leading fancy for the International Vase, has not been out since September when he coped with being hit over the head by the runner-up jockey's whip before going to take the Listed Troy Stakes at Doncaster.
