Million Challenge leaders line up again

6 October 2003

After a cease-fire of two weeks, the Happy Valley Million Challenge will resume at Wednesday's meeting with races 6, 7 and 8 all included in the challenge series.

Among the horses declared to run in the three races, 12 have already earned points and four are sharing the lead.

The night's feature race is the seventh, the Community Chest Cup, a Class 3 event over 1200m carrying HK$700,000 prize money. Mr David Eldon, Executive Committee Chairman of the Community Chest and a Steward of the Jockey Club, will present the Cup to the winning owner. The owner, trainer and jockey of the winning horse will each receive a miniature of the trophy.

The Community Chest is an independent, non-profit making and non-government subsidised charitable organisation which raises funds for social welfare agencies serving the needs of the many disadvantaged and less fortunate in the community. No deduction is made for administration and campaign expenses which are met by a donation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, investment income and commercial sponsorship. Each year, about 800,000 people benefit from services provided by the Chest's member agencies.

The Community Chest presented the Cup to commemorate its 30th anniversary in 1998. From the 1999/2000 season, the Cup has became a perpetual one and has since been competed for annually.

For the Million Challenge, which comprises all Happy Valley races of Class 3 or above up until 31 December 2003, points will be awarded according to the following system: winner 12 points, second 6, third 4, fourth 3, and fifth 2. The list of the 10 leading contenders will be published after each Happy Valley meeting.

When the competition ends at the last Happy Valley meeting in December 2003, a total bonus of HK$1,000,000 will be awarded to the owners of the three horses with the highest accumulated points. The top horse will receive $650,000 and a trophy; the second will receive $250,000 and the third $100,000.
