Mighty Hugo and Amo aim to close on Million Challenge leader

25 November 2003

Mighty Hugo and Amo, both already good point-scorers in the Happy Valley Million Challenge, can put themselves within reach of the leader by winning at the City course tomorrow night.

Amo is currently fifth with 20 points and Mighty Hugo sixth with 18 points. Wins on Wednesday would put them on 32 points and 30 points respectively, well within reach of the Million Challenge leader, Dashing Champion on 40 points.

By landing the POLA Cup last Wednesday, Splendid Patrol proved again that horses that had previously won points in the Million Challenge are the ones to follow. Helped by the 10-pound claim of apprentice Thomas K T Yeung, the Tony Millard-trained six-year-old led throughout to win the Class One event over 1800m, leaping into second position with the addition of 12 points.

The 19 runners with points in the Million Challenge produced two winners, two seconds and two thirds in the three Challenge races last Wednesday. Five of them filled the first five positions in race 7, for which the Quinella paid $746, the Tierce $11,660 and the Trio $2,382.

The Happy Valley Million Challenge is a contest inaugurated this season for the best-performed horse at the Happy Valley track for Class Three events or above between September 1 and December 31, 2003.

There are three Challenge races again this Wednesday, and the fields include 11 horses that have already earned points, including Mighty Hugo who is targeting race seven, the night's feature race, the St Andrew's Challenge Quaich.

The race is a Class 2 event over 2200m carrying $1 million prize money. Mrs Marshall Byres, wife of the Chieftain of the Hong Kong St Andrew's Society, will present the trophy and a miniature to the winning owner.

A quaich, or in the Gaelic "cuagh", is a Scottish drinking cup by tradition filled with whisky and presented by the Chieftain to his piper when he has played particularly well. The piper must drink the whisky in one sup and kiss the upturned quaich to show it is empty.

The Hong Kong St Andrew's Society follows tradition for a notable achievement in presenting a quaich to the winner of the St Andrew's Challenge Quaich.
