Champions Mile 2005 - Jockey/Trainer/Owner Quotes

14 May 2005

1 - Bullish Luck - jockey, Gerald Mosse: "Tony [Cruz, trainer] told me before the race to produce his finish on the outside but I couldn't get out there so I took a risk to stay on the inside and it worked out. He showed a fantastic turn of foot and he ran down Silent Witness. Not many do that."

Trainer, Tony Cruz: "Gerald gambled on going inside and it worked out well. Bullish Luck will now go for the Yasuda Kinen and Gerald will probably take the ride there, too. I'm a bit disappointed for Silent Witness but I'm happy in that I train Bullish Luck, too, and his owner Wong Wing-keung is a very good friend of mine."

2 - Silent Witness - jockey, Felix Coetzee: "What can I say? He got run down. It's very disappointing."

Trainer, Tony Cruz: "I told Gerald Mosse on Bullish Luck to move on the outside but he gambled on going inside. If he had gone on the outside, Silent Witness would have won. It will be back to sprints with him next season but in my heart he is still a champion."

Owner, Archie da Silva - "I'm very proud of him because he has proven that he can run a mile. There is a strong headwind down the back straight and that has been costing leaders with no cover all day and I think that played a part. But every horse has to lose one day and he has done his job for this season. He needs a break now and he will come back next season in the sprints and we'll have another crack at this race again next year."

3 - Ain't Here, jockey Brett Prebble: "He gave me everything but that's as good as he is. He always ends up two lengths behind Bullish Luck."

4 - Bowman's Crossing, trainer David Oughton: "He's back to form and I'm very pleased with that. He got caught up behind the Australian horse on the turn and that might have cost him a length or so. There's nothing for him here now for the rest of the season so I might consider taking him to Japan for the Yasuda Kinen."

5 - Super Kid - jockey Glyn Scholfield: "He had the box-seat run just behind the pace and he moved up on the turn but it was the usual thing with him that he was feeling the fast ground in the finish."

6 - The Duke - jockey Shane Dye: "He ran really well, tried very hard."

8 - Delzao - jockey, Stephen Baster - "From that widest barrier we had to go back and gave them too much rope in front. Had he drawn better barrier he would have finished closer for sure."

10 - Cosmo Bulk - jockey, Tsuyoshi Chiba - "He was shying away from the horse beside him at the start. I wanted to get a forward position and he was travelling nicely a half-mile out, but I think the ground was a bit too fast for him. He didn't like it."

11 - Attraction - jockey, Kevin Darley: "She missed the break a bit, but she was very lethargic overall and that's not her. I was niggling her at the end of the back straight and on the turn I was kidding myself that she was back on the bridle but it's was just that there was one that was one coming back on her. She pulled up very tired."
