Born in Johannesburg, Patrick Bernard Shaw grew up around racehorses - his grandfather and father were trainers. He started out as assistant to his father in 1973 and became a licenced trainer in South Africa in 1990. Shaw was consistently among the top 10 trainers in South Africa and shared the champion trainer title with Tony Millard in 1994. His biggest success in his homeland came the following year with Teal's 1995 Durban July victory. His first big name after his move to Singapore was Palace Line, a winner of the G3 Singapore Classic and the Singapore Guineas in 2002. Shaw's close association with prominent South African owner Fred Crabbia saw the trainer prepare a number of smart horses, most significantly Singapore's recently-retired champion sprinter Rocket Man. A winner of 20 races from 27 starts, the son of Viscount put Singapore on the map when he dead-heated with One World in the 2010 G2 Jockey Club Sprint at Sha Tin, while he fell just short of giving Singapore their first international G1 win when he was beaten a short-head by J J The Jet Plane in the 2010 Hong Kong Sprint. Rocket Man finally snared a first international G1 three months later when he won the 2011 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan, while he won his first KrisFlyer International Sprint at his third attempt that same year. Shaw added a second KrisFlyer with Ato in 2012, while he has won Singapore's premier local sprint, the Lion City Cup, a record five times. The handler was named Singapore's champion trainer in 2011, having prepared 78 winners.
