Born 12 July 1957, Yiu rode 15 winners between 1974 and 1981 and was first licensed as a trainer in 1995/96. One of his greatest moments came with Fairy King Prawn's success in the inaugural Hong Kong Sprint of 1999. In recent seasons he performed impressively with one of the best win strike-rates in town with his world champion sprinter, Sacred Kingdom, winner of the Gr.1 Cathay Pacific HK Sprint and Chairman's Sprint Prize leading the way. Sacred Kingdom, the highest rated or joint highest rated sprinter in the world for the last three years, repeated his CXHK Sprint victory in 2009, following a triumph overseas in Singaporeˇ¦s G1 KrisFlyer International Sprint in May of the same year. Although an operation for a twisted gut cut short Sacred Kingdomˇ¦s 2009/10 campaign his three victories at G1 and HKG1 level were enough to secure him the Horse of the Year title. Ricky Yiu had trained 406 Hong Kong winners by end of 2009/2010 of which 39 came in that season. |
