Race:1 (530) BRIAR HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1650 m

RISING POWER lost a significant amount of ground when very slow to begin. Before being allowed to race again, RISING POWER will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.
GOLDEN KID began only fairly.
DAZZLE WINNER shifted out at the start and bumped the hindquarters of HAPPY CENTURY.
For some distance after the start, CASH COURIER and HAPPY CENTURY raced tight due to CASH COURIER (Apprentice M F Poon) shifting in. Apprentice Poon was advised to ensure that he does not place undue pressure on other horses when shifting ground.
Approaching and passing the 1100 Metres, CHEERS CONQUEROR got its head up when travelling keenly.
At the 300 Metres, CASH COURIER was checked away from the heels of CHEERS CONQUEROR when disappointed for running between that horse which was giving ground and KWAICHUNG BROTHERS.
Passing the 150 Metres, DAZZLE WINNER momentarily raced in restricted room between TORNEY and GOLDEN KID.
Approaching the finishing line, RISING POWER, which was finishing off the race strongly, was severely checked away from the heels of HAPPY CENTURY which at this time raced tight inside GOLDEN KID which shifted in under pressure. When RISING POWER was checked, that horse shifted out, resulting in TORNEY being crowded for room inside the heels of DAZZLE WINNER. Because of this incident, both RISING POWER and TORNEY were unable to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race.
W M Lai (RISING POWER) was fined the sum of $2,000 for raising his whip arm above the height of his shoulder on a number of occasions in the Straight.
When questioned, J Moreira stated that he was given two sets of instructions in respect of how to ride KWAICHUNG BROTHERS. He said as a first option he was asked to ride KWAICHUNG BROTHERS positively if it began well and obtain a position outside the anticipated leader of the race GOBI STORM. He said if KWAICHUNG BROTHERS did not begin well, he was instructed to steady that horse and shift across behind runners to obtain cover. He said in accordance with his primary set of instructions, he rode his mount along in the early stages to take up a forward position as KWAICHUNG BROTHERS began well. He said KWAICHUNG BROTHERS did not show as much early speed as he expected and therefore he believed that he would have had to make too use of his mount to obtain a position outside GOBI STORM which approaching the winning post on the first occasion was positioned directly to the outside of CHEERS CONQUEROR. He said as it was no longer possible to steady his mount behind runners, he attempted to find a position with cover behind the leading division. He added after passing the winning post on the first occasion he believed that he may have been able to obtain a position behind HAPPY CENTURY and in front of CASH COURIER as that horse had on occasions failed to show early speed. He said however that CASH COURIER was hard ridden at this time to maintain its position to the inside of KWAICHUNG BROTHERS and this resulted in KWAICHUNG BROTHERS being left racing wide and without cover. He said as the tempo of the race in the middle stages was only moderate, he rode his mount along after the 900 Metres in the hope that he may be able to improve his position to race outside the leader GOBI STORM. He said however that KWAICHUNG BROTHERS did not quicken and he was unable to prevent HAPPY CENTURY from shifting out inside KWAICHUNG BROTHERS and improving its position around CHEERS CONQUEROR. He said at this time KWAICHUNG BROTHERS was not travelling well and when HAPPY CENTURY took up the position to the outside of GOBI STORM near the 650 Metres, KWAICHUNG BROTHERS continued to race without cover. He said KWAICHUNG BROTHERS came off the bridle before the 500 Metres and then did not finish off its race. A veterinary inspection of KWAICHUNG BROTHERS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
When questioned regarding the performance VARA PEARL, Apprentice H N Wong stated that the horse did not travel well at any stage of the race. He said after entering the Back Straight he attempted to ride VARA PEARL forward to follow KWAICHUNG BROTHERS, however, VARA PEARL was not travelling well enough to improve its position at this time. He said after the 700 Metres VARA PEARL came under heavy pressure and then did not close off the race and was disappointing. A veterinary inspection of VARA PEARL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that CHEERS CONQUEROR had bled from both nostrils.
KWAICHUNG BROTHERS, GOLDEN KID and HAPPY CENTURY were sent for sampling.
<29/3/2018 Additional Veterinary Report>VARA PEARL, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. VARA PEARL was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer M J Freedman this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, VARA PEARL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Race:2 (531) BROOM HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1650 m

SEA PEARL was withdrawn on 27.3.18 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SPEEDY WALLY (K C Leung). Before being allowed to race again, SEA PEARL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
M L Yeung (CHARITY WINGS) was fined the sum of $2,000 for presenting himself to weight out with the incorrect saddle cloth number.
K C Leung (SPEEDY WALLY) was fined the sum of $2,000 for presenting himself to weight out with the incorrect saddle cloth number.
Prior to being presented in the Parade Ring, the tongue tie fitted to LUCKY MASTER became loose. The tongue tie was reapplied to LUCKY MASTER on arrival at the Start.
On arrival at the Start, Apprentice M F Poon expressed concern regarding the action of GO GO WIN. GO GO WIN was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said that after the necessary consultations the horse was suitable to race.
KING BOUNTIFUL was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start, CHARITY WINGS was bumped by GOLDEN SLEEP which shifted in
From wide barriers, SICHUAN BOSS, FINE WITH ME and SPEEDY WALLY were all steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Near the 1350 Metres, SPEEDY WALLY got its head on the side and shifted out towards the heels of SICHUAN BOSS which was racing tight inside UNIQUE JOYFUL.
Near the 1250 Metres, MONEY WINNER got its head up when awkwardly placed behind SUPREME WITNESS.
Passing the 1200 Metres, FINE WITH ME raced close to the heels of SICHUAN BOSS.
After the 1200 Metres, SUPREME WITNESS got its head up on a number of occasions when travelling keenly.
After being brushed by UNIQUE JOYFUL making the turn after the 600 Metres, CHARITY WINGS got its head on the side and lay in despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in SPEEDY WALLY being checked when momentarily crowded. As the Stewards were satisfied that M L Yeung, the rider of CHARITY WINGS, had made sufficient endeavours to prevent his mount from shifting in, no further action was taken.
In the early part of the Straight, SICHUAN BOSS was held up for clear running behind LUCKY MASTER.
Passing the 300 Metres, SICHUAN BOSS was shifted to the inside of LUCKY MASTER, however, continued to have difficulty obtaining clear running until approaching the 100 Metres at which time SICHUAN BOSS was shifted to the outside of GO GO WIN to obtain clear running. When SICHUAN BOSS was shifted out at this time, LUCKY MASTER was momentarily steadied away from the heels of that horse. GOLDEN SLEEP, which was racing to the outside of LUCKY MASTER, raced in restricted room between that horse and FINE WITH ME which was racing tight inside UNIQUE JOYFUL (M Chadwick) who at this time momentarily lost the use of his whip.
Throughout the race, GOLDEN SLEEP travelled wide and without cover.
The Stewards will interview Mr A Lee, the trainer of UNIQUE JOYFUL, regarding the manner in which that horse was ridden this evening prior to the Sha Tin racemeeting to be conducted on Monday, 2 April 2018.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that FINE WITH ME had sustained a minor wound to the left hind coronet.
A veterinary inspection of GOLDEN SLEEP and SUPREME WITNESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CHARITY WINGS and MONEY WINNER were sent for sampling.
<29/3/2018 Additional Veterinary Report>SUPREME WITNESS, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. SUPREME WITNESS was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its right hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, SUPREME WITNESS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
<2/4/2018 28 March 2018 Happy Valley Racemeeting – Race 2 (531)>The Stewards today questioned Mr A Lee, the trainer of UNIQUE JOYFUL, regarding the tactics adopted on the horse in this race. Mr Lee confirmed that the instructions had been identical to those provided at its previous start when the horse had also begun from a wide barrier over the course and distance. He said on both occasions he had asked Jockey M Chadwick to attempt to obtain a forward position but not to ride his mount aggressively to do so. He said UNIQUE JOYFUL had previously travelled keenly when ridden hard to obtain a forward position and given that the horse was racing over 1650 Metres he did not want it to be hard ridden to be forward as, in his opinion, the horse may not finish off the race if ridden in this manner. He said whilst this had resulted in UNIQUE JOYFUL racing further back in the field than had been anticipated, it would be his intention to ensure that the horse is ridden consistently in its future starts in that it will not be ridden aggressively to obtain a forward position, however, the hope would be that it would be able to be as prominent as possible.

Race:3 (532) GREEN LANE HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m

COUR VALANT was withdrawn on 27.3.18 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter MY HONEY (M Chadwick). Before being allowed to race again, COUR VALANT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
MY HONEY and NUMERO UNO bumped on jumping.
A short distance after the start, MY HONEY was checked when crowded for room between NUMERO UNO which shifted in after becoming unbalanced and DIAMOND LEGEND which was taken out by TRAVEL SUCCESSOR which shifted ground after being bumped by LEISURED FEET. After this, from wide barriers, DIAMOND LEGEND, MY HONEY and NUMERO UNO were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
INVESTOR BOOM shifted out shortly after the start and bumped the hindquarters of SPLIT OF A SECOND, causing both horses to become unbalanced.
Near the 650 Metres, GOLDEN GLORY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of LEISURED FEET. CALL ME AWESOME, which was following GOLDEN GLORY, commenced to travel keenly and had to be checked away from the heels of that horse approaching the 600 Metres.
For some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, DIAMOND LEGEND was awkwardly placed behind GOLDEN GLORY when being shifted to the outside of that horse in an attempt to improve between GOLDEN GLORY and CALL ME AWESOME. Then near the 150 Metres, DIAMOND LEGEND was directed to the inside of GOLDEN GLORY when unable to improve between CALL ME AWESOME and GOLDEN GLORY which shifted out under pressure. As DIAMOND LEGEND had not established running to the outside of GOLDEN GLORY, no further action was taken.
Throughout the race, FOREVER KINDNESS travelled wide and without cover.
A veterinary inspection of MY HONEY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
GOLDEN GLORY, HERO TIME and LEISURED FEET were sent for sampling.

Race:4 (533) THE VOLUNTEERS' CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 2 1200 m

COUNTRY MELODY was crowded for room on jumping between MOMENTUM LUCKY and ALMABABY which shifted in. MOMENTUM LUCKY was then bumped by FABULOUS ONE which shifted out, resulting in MOMENTUM LUCKY becoming unbalanced.
From the outside barrier, BLOCKER DEE was shifted across behind runners shortly after the start.
GREAT HONOUR got its head up when being steadied to obtain cover shortly after the start.
After initially being ridden along in the early stages, ALMABABY was steadied approaching the 1100 Metres in an attempt to obtain cover behind MOMENTUM LUCKY. ALMABABY then travelled keenly and was unable to shift in behind MOMENTUM LUCKY which resulted in ALMABABY travelling wide and without cover throughout.
FABULOUS ONE made the turn after the 600 Metres awkwardly.
BLOCKER DEE had some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching the 200 Metres and near the 150 Metres was shifted to the inside of JUMBO LUCK to obtain clear running.
When questioned, Apprentice H N Wong stated that he was given identical instructions to those which he was given last start when riding FABULOUS ONE, those instructions being to obtain a forward position without having to make too much use of the horse. He said he was asked to attempt to lead the race, however, if another runner was intent on obtaining the lead, then he should allow that horse to go forward and take a trailing position. He said, unlike at its last start when FABULOUS ONE showed natural early speed, FABULOUS ONE tonight, despite being ridden along in the early stages, did not show the same speed that it showed at its most recent start. He said FABULOUS ONE became unbalanced at the start after shifting out and bumping MOMENTUM LUCKY and then, despite being ridden along for a considerable distance in the early stages, was reluctant to improve its position. He said when he noted JUMBO LUCK being aggressively ridden from a wide barrier to obtain a forward position, he formed the view passing the 1100 Metres that it was no longer possible for him to obtain the lead as JUMBO LUCK was showing superior speed to FABULOUS ONE and he felt that if he continued to ride his mount along, FABULOUS ONE would be left racing wide and without cover outside CALIFORNIA WHIP. He said he therefore made the decision making the first turn near the 1000 Metres to obtain a trailing position behind CALIFORNIA WHIP which resulted in FABULOUS ONE racing further back in the field than had been intended. He added after obtaining cover behind CALIFORNIA WHIP, FABULOUS ONE travelled keenly. Mr W Y So, the trainer of FABULOUS ONE, confirmed the instructions had been to obtain a forward position and lead if possible but not to make too much use of the horse to do so in the early stages so that FABULOUS ONE would be given the opportunity to close off the race. He said it was apparent that FABULOUS ONE did not show the same early speed that it had previously displayed in a number of its races and he was satisfied that Apprentice Wong had made a sufficient endeavour to comply with his instructions. A veterinary inspection of FABULOUS ONE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of JUMBO LUCK immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being allowed to race again, JUMBO LUCK will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
CALIFORNIA WHIP and E-SUPER were sent for sampling.

Race:5 (534) HAWTHORN HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1200 m

S Clipperton was fined the sum of $7,000 for weighing in 2 lbs overweight on ALL GREAT FRIENDS.
After being loaded into the barriers, SIR REDALOT became fractious and got out under the front gates riderless. SIR REDALOT then completed a circuit of the course before being recaptured. During this time the remainder of the field was unloaded which resulted in a considerable delay to the start of the race. Acting on veterinary advice that SIR REDALOT was not suitable to race, that horse was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before being allowed to race again, SIR REDALOT will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
JUMBO HAPPINESS and JOYFUL MOMENTS bumped at the start.
From wide barriers, HIGH FIVE, SAUL’S SPECIAL and GAMEPLAYER EMPEROR were all steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
When being steadied to obtain cover, JUMBO HAPPINESS was awkwardly placed outside the heels of CHARITY GLORY shortly after the start.
Passing the 1100 Metres, HIGH FIVE, which was being steadied to obtain cover, was awkwardly placed outside the heels of GAMEPLAYER EMPEROR which was awkwardly placed outside DOUBLE VALENTINE.
Passing the 600 Metres, AMAZING shifted in and brushed the running rail.
In the early part of the Straight, GAMEPLAYER EMPEROR lay in under pressure.
Apprentice H N Wong (PRINCE HARMONY) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of JUMBO HAPPINESS, resulting in that horse being hampered and having to shift in away from the heels of PRINCE HARMONY and in doing so becoming unbalanced and shifting in onto ALCARI which was checked when crowded onto AMAZING which was also badly hampered. Apprentice Wong was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Saturday, 21 April 2018 and to expire on Thursday, 26 April 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays).
After the 100 Metres, CHARITY GLORY got its head on the side and lay in and passing the 50 Metres was bumped by JOYFUL MOMENTS which shifted in, resulting in both CHARITY GLORY and JOYFUL MOMENTS becoming unbalanced.
Close to the finishing line, GAMEPLAYER EMPEROR was awkwardly placed behind DOUBLE VALENTINE which was awkwardly placed outside the heels of PRINCE HARMONY.
Throughout the race, ALL GREAT FRIENDS travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, J Moreira stated that at its most recent start he was asked to ride ALCARI with cover if possible. He said on that occasion it was anticipated that CHEERFULJET might lead the race and therefore it had been hoped that he would be able to obtain a trailing position behind that horse. He said on that occasion making the first turn near the 1000 Metres ALCARI was inclined to shift ground and therefore when CHEERFULJET did not make a concerted effort to lead the race, he allowed ALCARI to remain racing inside CHEERFULJET in the lead. He said when ridden in the lead ALCARI got its head on the side and lay out after the 400 Metres which allowed the opportunity for a number of horses to improve their positions to the inside of ALCARI. He added after that race Mr P F Yiu, the trainer of ALCARI, felt that ALCARI had raced greenly in the lead and therefore he was asked tonight to ensure that he obtained a trailing position on the horse. He said as PRINCE HARMONY which had previously shown good early speed in a number of its races was engaged in tonight’s race, Mr Yiu felt that there was a good opportunity for ALCARI to follow that horse which may provide ALCARI with the opportunity to finish off the race better than it did at its last start. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode ALCARI positively in the early stages and then allowed PRINCE HARMONY to cross ALCARI after the 1000 Metres. He said ALCARI travelled well behind PRINCE HARMONY until passing the 600 Metres at which time the horse again was inclined to race greenly and want to shift ground. He added, unlike at its last start when the horse made the Home Turn awkwardly, ALCARI was able to shift directly to the inside of PRINCE HARMONY at the entrance to the Straight, however, the horse did not respond to his riding when placed under pressure and was disappointing. He said although ALCARI suffered interference passing the 100 Metres, that horse was beaten at this time and whilst the horse may have finished somewhat closer than it eventually did, the horse would not have finished in the placings. Mr Yiu confirmed that it had been intended for ALCARI to be ridden with cover at its most recent start when the horse finished second. He said whilst ALCARI was able to finish second on that occasion, he was disappointed with the manner in which the horse had closed off the race over the concluding stages and felt that ALCARI may have finished off stronger if it had been given the opportunity to race with cover. He said he was also concerned with the manner in which ALCARI lay out making the Home Turn in that race and he felt that were ALCARI to obtain cover tonight, the horse may finish off the race better than it did last start. He said he therefore asked Jockey Moreira to ensure that, if possible, ALCARI was able to obtain a trailing position tonight. He said following ALCARI’s disappointing performance, it was his intention, if the programme allows, to return the horse to Sha Tin over the straight 1000 Metres as it had previously performed well at that course and distance. A veterinary inspection of ALCARI immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
ALCARI, PRINCE HARMONY and CHARITY GLORY were sent for sampling.

Race:6 (535) THE HAPPY VALLEY VASE (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 1 1800 m

PIKACHU began only fairly and then was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
ROCKETEER and GOLD MOUNT bumped at the start. A short distance after the start, GOLD MOUNT was crowded for room between ROCKETEER and EAGLE WAY which was taken in by DINOZZO.
When being ridden along to obtain a forward position in the early stages, HAPPILABABY got its head on the side and lay in and approaching the winning post on the first occasion was steadied to obtain a position with cover.
Despite being hard ridden for a considerable distance in the early stages, PACKING DRAGON failed to muster speed and passing the winning post on the first occasion was left racing wide and without cover. PACKING DRAGON was subsequently allowed to improve its position to race outside the lead after the 900 Metres.
After initially being ridden along from a wide barrier to obtain a forward position, PRAWN BABA was steadied passing the 1600 Metres to obtain cover and was then left racing wide and without cover after the 700 Metres.
Near the 250 Metres, DINOZZO shifted in and bumped HORSE OF FORTUNE.
B Prebble reported that after the 700 Metres EAGLE WAY was on the wrong leg and therefore he transferred his weight in an attempt to have the horse switch the leading legs.
A veterinary inspection of ROCKETEER immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, ROCKETEER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of HAPPILABABY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
DINOZZO, GOLD MOUNT and EAGLE WAY were sent for sampling.

Race:7 (536) HAWTHORN HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 3 1200 m

INFINITY ENDEAVOUR shifted in on jumping and hampered TRIUMPHANT JEWEL which lost ground.
From wide barriers, SUPER LEADER and SPRING WIN were steadied shortly after the start to obtain cover.
From the outside barrier, DARK KNIGHT was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Then in the middle stages, DARK KNIGHT became detached from the field and was eased down in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of DARK KNIGHT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of DARK KNIGHT, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DARK KNIGHT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Making the first turn after the 1100 Metres, BOLD STITCH and HARRIER JET raced tight.
After the 800 Metres, HARRIER JET was left racing wide and without cover.
Near the 150 Metres, SPARKLING DRAGON and BOLD STITCH raced tight.
Over the final 100 Metres, BOLD STITCH lay in under pressure.
Approaching the 50 Metres, CAPTAIN BOSS was steadied to avoid the heels of SUPER LEADER which improved to be racing inside the heels of SPARKLING DRAGON which, after racing tight inside BOLD STITCH, shifted in marginally. CAPTAIN BOSS was then awkwardly placed close to the heels of SUPER LEADER over the concluding stages and consequently was not able to be ridden out.
SPARKLING DRAGON, INFINITY ENDEAVOUR and BOLD STITCH were sent for sampling.

Race:8 (537) HOLLY HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1800 m

GLORIOUS ARTIST lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and then shortly after the start was crowded for room between SHARP SAILOR and THE JUDGE, both of which shifted ground.
HAR HAR HEART began awkwardly and then on jumping was bumped by GENERAL DINO which shifted in. After this, HAR HAR HEART was shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
Also from the outside barrier, TEN FLAMES was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
After the 1300 Metres, KING’S MAN was left racing wide and without cover.
When being steadied to allow PLAY WISE to cross after the 1200 Metres, THE JUDGE travelled keenly and got its head up when awkwardly placed behind PLAY WISE.
Passing the 700 Metres, TEN FLAMES was bumped and taken wider by HAR HAR HEART which shifted out to improve. After this, HAR HAR HEART travelled wide and without cover.
Near the 650 Metres, SHARP SAILOR was awkwardly placed outside GENERAL DINO which shifted out.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, THE JUDGE and GENERAL DINO raced tight.
Near the 250 Metres, GLORIOUS ARTIST was hampered when bumped by FAITHFUL TRINITY (C Y Ho) which shifted in. C Y Ho was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he does not place undue pressure on other runners. After this, FAITHFUL TRINITY was held up for clear running when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ACCLAIMED LIGHT which at this time shifted out marginally when also held up for clear running.
GLORIOUS ARTIST was unable to obtain clear running over the final 150 Metres and consequently was not able to be tested.
Passing the 150 Metres, ACCLAIMED LIGHT raced tight outside PLAY WISE which got its head on the side and lay out when commencing to give ground.
A veterinary inspection of PLAY WISE immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea.
A veterinary inspection of GLORIOUS ARTIST immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of GENERAL DINO immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, GENERAL DINO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
THE JUDGE, SHARP SAILOR and VICTORY BOYS were sent for sampling.
