Born 28 July 1967, Yip was licensed as a jockey in Hong Kong between 1984 and 1993. He rode a total of 59 winners and later learned the training game overseas and then acted as assistant to multiple champion trainer, Brian Kan. In 2002/03 he became a licensed trainer in his own right. Yip trained over 30 winners in each of his eight-year training career and landed 35 winners in 2009/10, in which he enjoyed HKG3 success with Fat Choy Ichiban in the Queen Mother Memorial Cup, for an overall total of 327.
