Not too many horses want to take on the
two highly accomplished US and English classic winners in War
Emblem and Hawk Wing in the four million US dollars 2002
Breeders' Cup Classic.
After taking the first two legs of the
American Triple Crown with his front running ability, War Emblem
stumbled badly off the jump in the Belmont Stakes and was badly
beaten to eighth in the field of eleventh. After a two months break,
War Emblem redeemed his reputation by winning the 1800m Grade
1 Haskell Invitation at Monmouth by more than three lengths. Facing
elders for the first time at Del Mar in the 10 furlongs Pacific
Classic, War Emblem was pressed through out and had nothing
left coming home. If War Emblem is able to assume an unchallenged
lead up front, his chances of revenging his defeat against the elders
could materialize.
The blue-blooded Eclipse Stakes winner
Hawk Wing was trying dirt racing for the first time. On pedigree,
he is by the high-class dual purposes (turf and dirt) sire Woodman
and out of the double Canadian Classic (Queen's Plate and Canadian
Oaks) winner La Lorgnette, racegoers should have no worries
backing this three-year-old over 10 furlongs on the main dirt track.
Robert Frankel trained Belmont second
Medaglia D'oro is well rested since late August with the
service of Champion jockey Jerry Bailey, this sophomore could bring
in the Frankel's first BC Classic winner after many disappointments
these years.
