The North And The South

Since 1999, the Cox Plate is the only Southern Hemisphere race to be included in the Emirates World Series Racing Championship. The Cox Plate at Moonee Valley was first run in 1922. The distance of 2,000 metres was set so that it was short enough for strong milers could take part and long enough to serve as a lead-up for the Melbourne Cup. It is Australasia's principal weight-for-age event and if a horse hasn't won the Plate his claim to the "champion" tag is very tenuous.

Last year, Sunline won the Plate for the second consecutive year and subsequently landed the Hong Kong Mile, proving herself as one of the greatest horses in the world.
