Long been recognised as the premier event
in Canada, this Grade 1 12f (2400m) turf race for 3 years and up,
has gone through several name changes since its inception in 1938.
It was originally named Canadian Championship
Stakes in the inaugural year and was won by the Canadian-bred Bunty
Lawless, who was bred and raced by his owner Mr. Willie Morrissey
of Toronto. In the later years, this great Canadian turf race was
sponsored by the tobacco giant Rothman and was renamed as the Rothman's
International for many years until the Canadian law prohibited the
public advertisement of all tobacco product thus causing this historic
race to be renamed the Canadian International.
This top-class Canadian turf race has always
been one of the final stops for many horsemen in the Northern Hemisphere
long before the arrival of the Breeders' Cup races. The biggest
star of all to visit the Rexdale course in the past 30 years had
to be the infamous 1973 US Triple Crown winner Secretariat,
who easily taking this 2400m race under snowy condition with substitute
rider Eddie Maple and retired immediately after the race.
Many visiting European champions have taken
this year-end race during this time, headed by two marvellous female
Dahlia and All Along. It is also worth mentioning that in
the past six years, the Maktoum brothers have sent out three winners
of the Canadian International with Mutamam, Mutafaweq and
Singspiel.
