Arlington Park in Chicago is going to offer a special Turf
International Festival of racing this year and high on every
horseman's agenda is the one million US dollars Arlington
Million. Two supporting Grade or Group 1 major turf races
carrying attractive purse of US$ 400,000 and US$ 700,000 will
indeed draw other top-class grass horses from around the globe
to Chicago for this special turf festival.
Ranked high up in this year's running of the Million, racing
fan could anticipate the powerful Godolphin stable in bringing
their French champion and classic winner Sulamani (winner
of the 2002 Prix de Jockey Club (French Derby), 2003 Sheema
Classic and brave second in this year's 'King George' at Ascot)
across the Atlantic sea, to win that stable's one-hundredth
world wide Group 1 wins.
If Sulamani were to become Godolphin history maker, he has
to contend with the ultra tough German-bred and world traveller
Paolini, who was an unlucky sixth in last year's Million after
getting caught in serious traffic coming home. Two months
later, he narrowly missed winning the 2000m US$ 2.3 million
Hong Kong Cup over the turf by a short head to the local champion
Precision.
One other major winner who is scheduled to face the starter
in the Million is the English trained US-bred Kaieteur. This
progressive 4 years old Marlin colt, made a rather belated
career in September of 2001, opened his account at a minor
juvenile maiden mile race at Bath. Kaieteur wasn't good enough
to run in any classic races last term but still managed to
place fourth at Royal Ascot's King Edward VII stakes over
12f. Trainer Brain Meehan put him on the road between July
and August in France and Germany, the decision returned handsome
dividend with a Group 1 win and a Group 2 runner-up placement.
Although he has yet to win a race in 2003, Kaieteur was good
enough to take third behind 2002 Japan Cup victor Falbrav
in the Eclipse stakes at Sandown thus strengthening his connections'
confidence in sending him over to win this million dollars
event.
Although owned by HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum,
the dual major winner Storming Home (winner of the 2002 Champion
Stakes at Newmarket and this year's Charles Whittingham Handicap
at Hollywood Park in California, both over 10 furlongs but
over turf and dirt respectively) could be representing US
in this year's running of the Arlington Million.
