A total purse of Euros870,000 is up for grabs in Germany's
most prestigious race, the Grosser Bugatti Preis, formerly
known as the Grosser Preis von Baden.
Fourteen entries stood their ground at the five-day stage
and the leading fancy has to be the dual classic placed Ransom
O'War, who was second in the 2003 Deutsches Derby and third
in the German 2000 Guineas (Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen). Furthermore,
this 3 years old Red Ransom colt became a major in his last
start by winning the 10 furlongs or 2000m Group 1 Grosser
Dallymayr Preis under the care of trainer Erica Mader.
The Ballydoyle team have entered the mud-loving Group 1 winner
Black Sam Bellamy and Powerscourt, victor of the Group 2 Great
Voltiguer Stakes over 2400m at York two weeks ago.
Godolphin won this race last year with Marienbard, who went
on to claim the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on his next outing
before retiring to stud. The Emirates-based team rely on Mamool
this time, and, like the winner 12 months ago, he has a past
win in the stayers' Gr.2 Yorkshire Cup over 2800m to his credit.
Dano-Mast, the Danish-trained third to Precision in last
year's Hong Kong Cup is entered, as is Indian Creek, beaten
two lengths into eighth place in the same race, and subsequently
a winner of two Pattern events in Britain.
Next Desert, the 2002 Deutsches Derby winner, will take his
chance, as will Big Bad Bob, winner of his last three starts
for Sussex trainer John Dunlop, including a Group 3 over 2000m
at this venue last time out. Dunlop has also entered Millenary,
a former Classic winner and a Group 2 winner over this trip
in July at Newmarket.
