| It's a bit of a surprise to see
veteran stayer Oriental
Express at the summit of the weights in the Sprint Trial
Trophy (Premier Handicap - 1000m) but King
Of Danes will prove more attractive to bettors on his seasonal
debut. After a fine third-placed run in the Hong Kong Sprint last
year, many believe that King Of Danes can shape even better in this
year's renewal. It was in this race 12 months ago that he made his
Hong Kong debut and sensationally defeated Fairy King Prawn. Since
then he has claimed the Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr.1-1000m) to firmly
establish himself as one of the top sprinters in town.
Lucky
Win was the top sprinter in Singapore before he arrived
at Peter Ho's stable during the summer and his trackwork has improved
appreciably since his debut in the Happy Valley Trophy (Gr.3-1200m)
when he was seriously hampered on the home turn. The track record
holder for the 1200m at Kranji where he won on nine occasions,
he almost stole the Singapore Airlines Krisflyer Sprint with devastating
early pace last May only to be cut down in the final strides by
Iron Mask with Plenty-Plenty
two and a quarter lengths further back in fourth place.
Although he won the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Gr.1-1600m) last
season, trainer David Hayes seems keener to tackle sprint distances
with Charming City than take on the likes of Electronic Unicorn
over 1600m. Charming
City finished third last time out ahead of five of his
rivals in the National Panasonic Cup - Solid
Contact, Kenwood
Melody, Plenty-Plenty, Winning
Counter and Champ
De Union - and should go well again. Three-quarters of
a length separated the winner, Solid Contact from the third-placed
Kenwood Melody in the Happy Valley Trophy (Gr.3-1200m) last month
this is their second meeting since then. Aspiring champions Our
Class and All
Thrills Too and Winning Counter are also there to add
further intrigue to the mix. Winning Counter and Our Class finished
one-two in the Sha Tin Vase (Gr.2-1000m) last term when King Of
Danes finished third. All Thrills Too, meanwhile, scored stylishly
last time out.
For top class domestic and international racing - your best bet
is to get to Sha Tin this Sunday. First race is at1.00pm.
