Dettori claims second International Jockeys' Championship

LANFRANCO DETTORI put the icing on another fantastic year by snatching his second Hong Kong International Jockeys' Championship at Happy Valley tonight.

In a thrilling climax to the three-race contest, the brilliant Italian-born jockey beat the leading Australian star, Damien Oliver, by one point.

Dettori scored the maximum 12 points when landing the first race on the odds-on Noble Boy and kept his score moving by finishing fifth, picking up two points, in both the second and third legs. Oliver won the final race by a whisker on Lomond's Fay, which took his score to 15 after he had grabbed a fourth in the second leg. He denied America's great Hall Of Fame jockey, Gary Stevens his first Hong Kong win since 1999 on Indubitably Bliss. Olivier Peslier won the middle leg on Successful Spirit.

Dettori, fresh from another event for international jockeys last weekend in Mauritius, collected a cheque for HK$200,000. Oliver was handed one for HK$100,000. Eddy Lei did the best of the home riders by finishing fifth with seven points.

A thrilled Dettori said: "It is tremendous to be able to come back to Hong Kong and do something like this. I have certainly had a terrific start to this week. Now the serious business is on Sunday."

Dettori rides Ekraar, China Visit and Tobougg for Godolphin in the Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin.

Oliver was graceful in defeat. He said: "I would have loved to have won the Championship but when you are going against guys like Frankie, Olivier Peslier and the rest, you are in for a tough ride. Second still looks pretty good. I'm going to celebrate and give myself a drink."

In addition, one more Hong Kong-based jockey with the most winners ridden this season after the meeting on 5 December will also be invited.

As in the previous years, the fourth running of the IJC will be held on the Wednesday night meeting at Happy Valley immediately prior to the International Races as a lead up event. Brief conditions of the races are as follows:

    1. Three races will be designated, each carries a 30% prize money bonus.

    2. A maximum of 12 jockeys will be invited.

    3. Each rider will compete individually in these three races.
    4. Score is to be calculated based on a point system.
    5. A total bonus of HK$300,000 will be awarded, with the top points scorer receiving HK$200,000 and the first runner-up receiving HK$100,000.

This lead up event has been well received by the racing fans and the media both locally and internationally, adding much interests and entertainment to the overall programme of the Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) week. Last year, Jockey Starke made his debut in the Hong Kong by appearing at this event and clinched the Championship. Olivier Peslier and Frankie Dettori will also return to the scene where they captured the IJC title in 1998 and 1999.

Regardless of their riding engagements on the HKIR day, jockeys invited to race in the IJC will be permitted to ride during the two meetings on 12 and 16 December 2001.

Point System

For each of the three races, 12 points are awarded to the winning jockey; 6 points to the first runner-up, 4 points to the second runner-up; 3 points to the fourth and 2 points to the fifth. The champion is the jockey with the highest total points.

Note: In case of deadheats in any of the first 5 placings, points will be added and divided by the number of horses involved and these apportioned points are given to each jockey concerned.

Championship Award

The Champion jockey receives a bonus prize money of HK$200,000 while the second placed jockey receives HK$100,000. In the event of any jockey sharing equal points, the jockey who has the most number of higher point earning places receives the bonuses as indicated.
