Caulfield Cup – Form Comments

G1 - 2400m - Turf

1

Admire Rakti

Japanese raider who hasn't raced since May when failed (13th) behind Fenomeno in the Tenno Sho. However he rated highly, despite the topweight of 128 lb, on basis of his 3.5 lengths 2nd to Gold Ship in Hanshin Daishoten in March and his one length 4th to Gentildonna in last year's Japan Cup.

2

Dandino

Runner-up to The Pizza Man in Arlington St Leger before 6.75 lengths 4th to Prince Bishop in the September Stakes at Kempton on 6 September. Seasoned traveller and ran 2nd to Fawkner, beaten 1.35 lengths, with similar weight in this race last year.

3

Green Moon

Runner-up in this race in 2011 and won the Melbourne Cup in 2012. Placed once only of 11 starts since and has to improve dramatically on latest run when 12 lengths 15th of 16 behind Lucia Valentina in the Turnbull Stakes.

4

Sea Moon

2012 Hardwicke Stakes winner in the UK. One win in seven Australian starts was in the 2013 Herbert Power Handicap at this course and distance. First start for seven months when 3.65 lengths 5th, under 132 lb, behind Who Shot Thebarman in 2520m Bart Cummings on 4 October.

5

Bande

Second Japanese contender. Finished a neck behind Admire Rakti when third in the Hanshin Daishoten in March. Last start, on 10 August, scored an impressive on pace win by five lengths in the Sapporo Nikkei at 2600 metres.

6

The Offer

Made good late ground when 4.1 lengths 6th to Lucia Valentina in the G1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on 4 October and well suited by the step up to 2400m.

7

Seismos

Stablemate to Dandino and a European trained runner. Came into calculations for this with neck win over Willing Foe in the 2655m Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury on 16 August.

8

Hawkspur

Settled well back but closing sectionals were sound when 5.35 lengths 10th to Lucia Valentina in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 4 October. Beaten 2.35 lengths when 7th in this race last year after striking severe interference.

9

Junoob

Douglas Whyte takes the ride on this in-form galloper who won the Hill Stakes at 2000m on 20 September before solid half length win over Opinion and Araldo in the G1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on 4 October.

10

Moriarty

Improved performance last time when ran on well to score short head win over Rising Romance in the 2000m Craven Plate on 4 October. Finished 10th in this race last year - 2.75 lengths from winner.

11

Who Shot Thebarman

Fourth runner for Sydney's champion trainer Chris Waller (he also has numbers 8,9,10). In great form with successive wins at Flemington despite being at the top of the weights. Last start a comfortable 2.5 lengths winner from Marksmanship in the G3 Bart Cummings at 2520m.

12

Dear Demi

Below very best last Saturday when 3.9 lengths 7th to Fawkner in the 2000m Caulfield Stakes but racing like she wants the longer trip. Ran very well when 1.35 lengths 3rd to Fawkner in this race last year.

13

Stipulate

On trial at this distance. Not won beyond 1810m; been placed at 2000m. Held on well when 3.6 lengths 5th to Lucia Valentina in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on 4 October.

14

Lidari

Raced on speed and fought on well when 0.5 lengths 2nd to Lucia Valentina in the Turnbull Stakes. Has won two of three at this distance.

15

Lucia Valentina

Top class filly and likely favourite for the race after her big finishing win in the Turnbull Stakes on 4 October. Close third, last season, in the AJC Oaks for fillies at only previous attempt at 2400m.

16

Rising Romance

New Zealand trained filly with sound record at the distance. Back in form last start with solid short head 2nd to Moriarty in the 2000m Craven Plate on 4 October.

17

Big Memory

Secured his place in the field with solid on-pace win in the Herbert Power Handicap, at this course and distance, last Saturday. Improving type with Corey Brown in the saddle.

18

Gris Caro

Impressed with strong win in the 2000m Naturalism Stakes at this track on 20 September before disappointing 5.8 lengths 12th to Lucia Valentina in the Turnbull Stakes.

Reserves

19

Brambles

2012 Queensland Derby winner at only previous 2400m run. 1700m winner at Flemington before sound on-pace 0.6 lengths 3rd to Lucia Valentina and Lidari in the Turnbull Stakes.

20

Araldo

Erratic on occasions but talented at his best and did run on well when 1.3 lengths 3rd to Junoob in the G1 The Metropolitan at this distance on 4 October.

21

Unchain My Heart

Up in class and would be surprise winner here after labouring 8.1 lengths 9th to Big Memory in the Herbert Power Handicap last Saturday.

22

Renew

Had very tough run early last week and dropped out late to be beaten 11.6 lengths in 12th place behind Big Memory in the Herbert Power Handicap.
