Japan's miler Hanas Goal and Singapore raider Spalato selected for BOCHK Wealth Management Jockey Club races

29/10/2014

Japan’s G1 winning mare Hana’s Goal has been selected to contest the G2 BOCHK Wealth Management Jockey Club Mile (1600m turf), while Singapore’s star galloper Spalato has been selected to compete in the G2 BOCHK Wealth Management Jockey Club Sprint (1200m turf), two of the three Jockey Club Races at Sha Tin Racecourse on Sunday, 23 November.

Five-year-old mare Hana’s Goal, trained by Kazuhiro Kato, scored twice at G3 level in the G3 Tulip Sho (1600m) in March 2012 and G3 Kyoto Himba Stakes (1600m) in January 2013.  This spring she travelled to Australia for a three-race campaign, all at G1 level.  Nash Rawiller, currently riding in Hong Kong, piloted the mare to her first top-level success in the G1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on 26 April.

Spalato, the John O’Hara-trained five-year-old gelding, is currently the top rising star in Singapore.  He has won all his six starts at Kranji this year, including two at top level – the SIN G1 Patron’s Bowl (1600m) in June and the prestigious SIN G1 Singapore Derby (2000m) in July.   Having spelled for two months he returned to the sprinting distance in his two most recent runs, including the latest when he won a 1200m Open class event by four lengths on Sunday 26 October.

Hana’s Goal and Spalato join Super Easy (2012), Rocket Man (2010), Eagle Mountain (2009) and Scenic Blast (2009) as overseas invitees to the Jockey Club races since these races were opened to international competition in 2009.  Rocket Man dead-heated for victory in the Jockey Club Sprint in 2010 and went on to finish a brave second in the G1 Hong Kong Sprint.

The Jockey Club Races on 23 November also feature the G2 LONGINES Jockey Club Cup (2000m), and the three G2 events are the premier lead-up races for the LONGINES Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin on Sunday, 14 December.

Domestic entries for the three Jockey Club Races will be announced on Monday 10 November.
