LONGINES Hong Kong Vase - post-race quotes in finish order

14/12/2014

1 FLINTSHIRE – Maxime Guyon: “You are always a bit under pressure when you’re riding such a favourite, especially after two second places at the highest level. But you have to focus on your race and once the gates open, you try to do your job as well as you can. We ended up pretty far away in the backstretch but I followed Red Cadeaux, knowing that he’d needed to start early. We eventually came about the frontline in the last turn and I was happy to let him go then. He accelerated without failing, even though he sort of idled once he hit the front. It’s nice to win after these 2nd places. Flintshire had a point to make here. We knew that all he needed was the proper ground to give his best. It is a great day for me as I come back here in two weeks for a six weeks stint and that puts my name in the news at the right time.”

2 WILLIE CAZALS – Douglas Whyte: “Great run but the winner was too good. We were there to snap him up but Flintshire fought back…and was just too strong.”

3 KHAYA – Mirco Demuro: “Very happy. He’s very one paced and he ran well. The instructions from John (Size) were to go to the front and I was able to make my own pace and he fought all the way.”

4 DOMINANT - Joao Moreira: “We had a very good run. The gaps came and he had his chance.”

5 CURREN MIROTIC – Kenichi Ikezoe: “He travelled from a good position.  I expected he would be able to hang on, but he did not have the same turn of foot as the leader in the stretch.”

6 RED CADEAUX – Gerald Mosse: “The pace was too slow and they quickened too much for him in the straight. He is a good stayer but cannot quicken with them when they go that slowly up front. He can’t peel off a 22 (second) furlong. He still ran very well given the slow pace.”

7 SNOW SKY – Ryan Moore: “He ran a fair race but flattened out.”

8 EMPOLI – Adrie de Vries: “Very unlucky. He blew the start and the race was gone. We had planned to sit in the first four but had no chance of doing that after the start. We had to sit and suffer and the slow pace was no help either.”

9 BUBBLE CHIC – Karis Teetan: “Apart from the slow pace, he is better on softer ground than this. He didn’t have much fight in the straight.”

10 PARISH HALL – Kevin Manning: “He ran a bit flat today – he is usually a bit buzzier, but not today. He needed more pace but he was a still a bit flat.”

11 RAINBOW CHIC – Brett Prebble: “He performed poorly. He’s a difficulty horse, wouldn’t settle.”
