Singapore Airlines International Cup – Form Comments

G1 – 2000m – Turf

1

Military Attack

The seven-year-old won this race two years ago and finished third behind Dan Excel and Smoking Sun last year. His form since then has been good, finishing on board four times, including a win in the HKG2 Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy over 1600m and a second to Designs On Rome in last December's G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Cup. Although he finished seventh to Blazing Speed last start in the G1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup over 2000m, he cannot be ruled out entirely. This highest-rated runner still has what it takes to win at this level.

2

Dan Excel

He won this race last year, beating Smoking Sun in course record time of 1m 59.07s which still stands. Since then, he has had only four starts and is peaking at the right time for his defense of Singapore's richest and most prestigious race. He kept improving with each race and, last time out, he finished a splendid third behind the world's top-rated star Able Friend in the G1 Champions Mile at Sha Tin. He's probably now back at the top of his game and a back-to-back SIA Cup double is not a tall order.

3

Meiner Frost

He comes into this race with a return to form by winning over the SIA Cup trip at Fukushima on 12 April. It was his best effort since finishing third in the G1 Japanese Derby over 2400m in Tokyo last June. His two runs prior to his last-start success were creditable efforts, finishing fourth on the two G2 events over 1800m and 2200m. He looks well and could be Japan's third SIA Cup winner after Cosmo Bulk and Shadow Gate.

4

Smoking Sun

He finished second to Dan Excel in this race last year. Since then, he has been sparingly raced with only four subsequent starts for a second over 2000m in G3 at Maison-Laffitte in September last year. In his latest outing, he beat only two home in the G1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup over 2000m at Sha Tin. However, he finished only 5 lengths behind Blazing Speed. He arrived in Singapore fit as a fiddle and can go one better this year.

5

Johnny Guitar

A winner of two G1s and one G3 in Argentina, he proved to be a handy galloper in Singapore and has won four times at Kranji, twice at SIN G3 level - both on the Polytrack over 1600m and 1700m. Perhaps his second to Horse of the Year War Affair in the SIN G1 Panasonic Kranji Mile last October being his most notable effort. He finished third in his final lead-up, the SIN G3 Admiralty Classic Stakes over 1600m on 26 April.

6

Quechua

The Group-winning performer in Argentina brought his top form to Singapore and put the icing on a winning streak by capturing the SIN G1 Longines Singapore Gold Cup over 2200m last November. He followed up with a win in the SIN G3 New Year Cup over 1900m on the Polytrack. After that, he was placed in three Group events, culminating in the SIN G2 Queen Elizabeth II Cup over 2000m on 26 April and the runs have certainly toned him up and make him one of Singapore's main hopes.

7

Stepitup

A small but gutsy horse. He was the Champion Three-Year-Old of his time, winning all three legs of the series, culminating in the SIN G1 Singapore Guineas over 1600m in 2013. He graduated from a sprinter-miler into a dour stayer, finishing second behind Spalato in the SIN G1 Emirates Singapore Derby over 2000m last year. A few Group placings followed but the five-year-old signalled his chances with his last-start scintillating last-stride win in the SIN G2 QE II Cup at Kranji on 26 April. He is Singapore's other top hope.

8

Cooptado

His three wins in his native Argentina included the G1 Gran Premio Nacional over 2500m on dirt at Palermo. He crossed over to Dubai and won once from five outings. That was four starts back on 18 Dec last year over 2000m on a fast track at Meydan. The former Doug Watson-trained four-year-old will be representing Singapore under trainer Patrick Shaw of Rocket Man fame.

9

Free Port Lux

Two of his three wins in France were at Group level -- the G2 Prix Hocquart over 2200m and the G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange over 2000m. Both were on soft tracks at Longchamp. He contested the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe over 2400m last October but beat only one home. He was spelled until 6 April when he resumed with a 3.5-length fifth in the G2 Prix d'Harcourt over 2000m on heavy going at Longchamp. He can grow a leg in the wet.

10

Slew Of Lode

He started his Kranji career as a sprinter and ran seventh to Lucky Nine in the G1 KrisFlyer International Sprint over 1200m last year. His form this year has been good and he has been gradually stepped up in distance. He won the SIN G3 Polytrack Mile Championship on 8 March and followed up with a win in the SIN G3 Marsiling Classic Stakes over the Polytrack 1800m. Last start, he finished second-last in the SIN G2 QE II Cup. He could be the pace influence but hard to see him win.

11

Wild Geese

He rose to become Group winner by capturing the QE II Cup last year but was outclassed and finished last behind Dan Excel in this race subsequently. He has struggled to get back to the winning list but has placed second in a SIN G2 last July though. Last start, he caught the eye with a narrow fourth behind Stepitup in the QE II Cup.
