Hong Kong quintet locked and loaded for Singapore challenge

16/05/2015

Hong Kong’s five contenders for the Singapore International Racing Festival had an easy time of it at Kranji this morning, Saturday 16 May, with the big event only a day away.

Aerovelocity is the likely race favourite for the G1 KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) and Paul O’Sullivan’s charge jogged around the Polytrack. A dual Group 1 winner already this term – LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint and Takamatsunomiya Kinen – the six-year-old is aiming to round out the campaign with a third top-flight triumph, a result that would surely seal Hong Kong Champion Sprinter status.

“The week’s gone very well, I’m very happy with him,” said O’Sullivan. “I’m not looking at it and thinking this could have gone better or that could have gone better, it’s all been good. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t run well. Sometimes they don’t but his trial was solid, he travelled well, he’s been relaxed and so I’m very happy.”

Positive noises were emanating from the John Moore camp after Dan Excel cantered two laps of the Polytrack shortly after 5am. Last year’s G1 Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m) winner appears to be on track for a big run as he attempts to become the race’s first two-time winner.

Dan Excel is not the only past victor with eyes on a repeat. Military Attack took the prize in 2013 when trained by Moore. Now in the care of Caspar Fownes, the seven-year-old will make his own bid for history on Sunday night. The Oratorio gelding also cantered on the Polytrack and appeared to be in good heart.

Hong Kong’s current Champion Sprinter, Lucky Nine, will attempt to complete a hat-trick in the KrisFlyer International Sprint. The Fownes stable stalwart also jogged around the Polytrack, having earlier limbered up with a trot down the back-side strip in company with Military Attack.

Rich Tapestry, another international G1 winner, also warmed up on the back-side. Michael Chang’s charge looked primed for Sunday’s sprint as he too jogged on the main Polytrack.
