Woodcote Stakes V Form Comments

05/06/2015

1

Aleko

The betting suggested that he would run well on his debut, against a field of fellow newcomers over this distance at Haydock last month. The confidence proved correct as Aleko grabbed an early lead and always looked in control despite various opponents throwing down challenges about 200m from the end.

2

Art Collection

Ran an encouraging second first time out and then was a winner at Brighton (an undulating track quite similar to Epsom) on his latest start. He did look in serious trouble 300m from the end but responded to his jockey's pressure when it mattered and won quite easily. This slightly longer distance should help but this is a stiffer assignment.

3

Be Bop Tango

From a stable that won this race a few years ago with an outsider. Be Bop Tango has run two decent races latterly when showing plenty of speed to land a minor maiden event over 1000m last month. However most of his rivals have been well beaten since, so the form looks weak.

4

Buratino

Has already raced four times, winning twice including over this distance at Newmarket. He moved up to Listed class and down to 1005m at Sandown last time, missing the break but doing plenty of good work in the closing stages to finish second to a colt who is expected to be a Group race contender. The return to this distance looks helpful.

5

Captainthunderbolt

Did not improve on a fair first start at Goodwood last time when dropping away in the closing stages. Horses without a prior win traditionally struggle in this event so the omens do not look good for Captainthunderbolt.

6

Nelspruit

Ran a very encouraging second in a decent 1207m maiden first time out and was made an odds-on favourite in a 1000m maiden subsequently which he won narrowly but quite decisively on Goodwood's tricky track. His breeding suggests that he'll be much happier back at this distance. Winning hopes from the stable that took this event in 2013 and 2014.

7

No Education

Made his debut at Newbury (a track which has some of the best maiden races) and ran much better than his odds of 33-1 might have suggested, finishing 6.5L fourth to a colt who has since easily won in Listed company. Horses without a previous victory don't have a great record in this event over the years but he won't have been told that!

8

Jeanie's Place

From a stable that invariable houses smart two-year-olds and this filly was well supported to beat eight rivals in a 1000m maiden on her debut last month. She accelerated when her jockey asked her, and was a convincing 3L winner. Neither the second or the third ran well next time which is perhaps a worry.

9

Just Emma

A winner on her second and latest start when making all the running to beat three rivals in a maiden event at Brighton in April. Her nearest rival that day has won since so the form has some substance.

10

Miss Moneypenny

Showed good early speed from a difficult gate and then revealed some late acceleration to beat 12 rivals in a maiden race at Windsor over 1009m on her second career start last month. The third has boosted the form by winning since, and Miss Moneypenny should be suited by this move to 1200m. Her trainer says she appreciates fast ground.
