'Dash' (Handicap) V Form Comments

1000m - Turf

1

Steps

Slowly away and then meeting interference he did incredibly well to finish a close fourth in last year's "Dash" finishing so fast that he was in front a few metres after the winning post. Last of seven on his only start this season but he should be much sharper, with this sprint having been his target.

2

Caspian Prince

His ten career wins include success in this event last year when he quickly grabbed a good position near the rails and fought back after being headed. Busy since, mostly running well including an excellent success at Meydan in February. Faces a stiffer task at the weights than he did this day last year, but he loves Epsom's super-fast 1000m.

3

Monsieur Joe

Didn't quite have the pace to get involved in the finish in this race last year, but was only 2 1/2L behind the winner. He arrives here in good heart, having come with a sustained challenge to win a 20-runner 1000m sprint at York last weekend, though he must carry 132lb for that victory.

4

Duke Of Firenze

A powerful late surge saw him victorious in this race two years ago, in action for a different stable then. However his two starts this season don't provide much confidence as he has finished last of eight and last of 20. Given those disappointments his handicap mark still looks high enough.

5

Boom The Groom

Has already had a busy year, racing eight times though his two wins have both come on an all-weather surface. His record on grass is just one win from ten starts, though he ran a respectable fifth when returning to the lawn last time.

6

Normal Equilibrium

He looked to handle this track well enough on his only previous visit here when fourth in a 1200m handicap at this meeting last year. A winner on the all-weather surface on his first start this season, and he has performed quite well in three turf starts since.

7

Humidor

He did finish well ahead in a sprint on his only previous visit here - last August - only for that race to be voided. At least it showed that he appreciated this unusual track whilst he also showed plenty of sparkle to win at Goodwood two starts back. However he ran very poorly last time, plus ground any faster than good would be a negative.

8

Silvanus

All speed, he is very much a specialist over this distance with all his 13 career victories coming over 1000m. Although the weights were against him in a non-handicap at Chester two starts back he whizzed around the bends there better than the rest to record a shock 25-1 victory.

9

Barnet Fair

Did best of those racing from a low gate in this event in 2014, beaten 2 1/4L in sixth place. He races off an identical handicap mark this time, having endured mixed fortunes in the last 12 months though he did manage a victory at Goodwood.

10

Seeking Magic

Might have captured this prize last year had he not had to switch at a crucial stage, only beaten a head by Caspian Prince. Not having won since - and also having run some disappointing races including when well fancied in the betting  -his handicap mark is now 6lb easier than at Epsom this day last year.

11

Confessional

Expensive to follow and it is now 21 starts since his last win though he does often get into the places including a slightly unlucky second of eleven at Chester two starts back. He was a close second in this event way back in 2011, considered a bit unlucky that day also.

12

Monumental Man

He has only visited Epsom twice before, and he has won both times so clearly deserves respect on what is a specialists track. The latest of those came last time out - 45 days before this "Dash" - when he soon grabbed the nearside rail and able to dominate most of the race. Getting to - or near- the front early on this time would be a big help.

13

Chiclet

This Irish raider had become disappointing, losing her first 12 races, before suddenly finding the winning habit and she has now won her last three starts. Both her victories this season have come over 1000m at Dundalk - Ireland's all-weather track - but her previous win had come on turf so no real concerns about the grass surface.

14

Burning Thread

Has been kept away from this track on his 43 start career though all of his six victories have come over this speed distance. On the face of it his two runs this season have been disappointing though his latest start can surely be ignored as he was squeezed badly just out of the gates.

15

Perfect Muse

A lightly raced three-times winner who may be capable of some more improvement. She was being urged along some way from the end at Goodwood on her only start this season but was doing some good work at the end, finishing a close third. This is her first visit to Epsom.

16

Desert Law

Without a win since landing a fast-ground sprint over this distance at Ascot way back in August 2012 having earlier that year finished a close second of 20 in this event when representing a different stable. He hasn't been beaten far in any of his last three starts.

17

Free Zone

From a stable who have a big reputation with sprinters though Free Zone did not shine for them in this event last year finishing last of 19. Well behind also in two starts this year so improvement needed and it is most likely to come if the ground turned soft.

18

Secret Missile

Supporters will need to forget a bad effort last time when the jockey reported that Secret Missile was never travelling. However on his previous run - his first start for this stable and on his first visit to Epsom - he had run an encouraging second, responding well to pressure from the jockey. He competes off an identical handicap mark today.

19

Pearl Acclaim

His two victories came back in 2012 and he has been largely disappointing since with his handicap mark dropping accordingly. He wasn't beaten far in a competitive handicap at York last time and from a stable who have had plenty of success in Epsom sprints over the years it would be no surprise if this has been a target.

20

Smoothtalkinrascal

Met with all sorts of hazards in this event in 2013 but was flying at the finish and looked very unlucky not to win, though racing for a more successful stable then. He also didn't have much luck in this last year, finishing 11th whilst none of his most recent starts have offered much encouragement.
