Secret Sham claims HKG3 Prince Jewellery & Watch Premier Cup

14/06/2015

The John Moore-trained Secret Sham (126 lbs) reached a new career high with a victory in the Hong Kong Group Three Prince Jewellery & Watch Premier Cup (Handicap) at Sha Tin this afternoon.

This 1400m contest is the last Group event in the current season and Moore, currently in England for stable star Able Friend’s G1 Queen Anne Stakes adventure on Tuesday (16 June), saddled five horses in a field of nine.

Jumping smartly from the widest gate in barrier nine, the Shamardal five-year-old was able to take a soft lead after 400m, while race-favourite and last-start winner Not Listenin’tome (123 lbs), with Joao Moreira in the saddle, was positioned in midfield.

Secret Sham gradually quickened at the top of home stretch and once rider Nash Rawiller shook the reins with 250m remaining, his response was immediate. The Brett Prebble-ridden Real Specialist (128 lbs), from John Size’s stable, tried to mount a strong challenge in the closing stages but Secret Sham held on well to win by a neck. Real Specialist took second with another runner from Moore, the lightly-weighted Exciting Dream (118 lbs) under local jockey Derek Leung, finishing third, a further half length away. Not Listenin’tome ran sixth. The winner’s time was 1m 21.46s.

“Everything panned out well today. We’re able to come across and find our place upfront. We didn’t do much work early,” said Rawiller who won his first Group race in Hong Kong.

“His last run was a bit disappointing but today, he turned it over.”

Moore cemented his prominent position in the Trainers’ Championship with 58 wins after People’s Knight won the griffin event Breguet Plate (1200m) with Gerald Mosse on board, and outsider Chevalier Star took the Class 4 Piaget Handicap (1400m) under Australian youngster Damian Lane.

A retirement ceremony for California Memory, one of the most popular horses in Hong Kong, was held after the running of Race 5. Trained by Tony Cruz, the American-bred son of Highest Honor will take his place at the world-renowned Living Legends retirement facility in Australia.
