St James's Palace Stakes – Form Comments

G1 - 1600m - Turf

1

Aktabantay

Started his two-year-old career over 1000m but improved sharply for stepping up in distance and gaining experience. Winner of a G3 at Sandown over 1415m on his penultimate 2014 start though it took a fine ride by Ryan Moore to get him home in front. Has a huge task on this reappearance.

2

Belardo

Achieved a lofty two-year-old rating when winning a G1 over 1400m at Newmarket last October. Nothing special on his 2015 debut but he ran better than the bare facts suggest when 1.75L 4th behind Gleneagles in the Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh, racing too freely and throwing down his challenge in what looked the unfavourable side of the track. Good or softer ground preferable.

3

Consort

Winner of his only start last season and he had reported to be slow to get ready this season. However when he did make his 2015 debut it was a decisive victory in a Listed race at Sandown, doing his best work in the closing stages of that 1613m event up the demanding hill at Sandown Park.  This stiff finish should be ideal and he could be improving fast.

4

Gleneagles

His superb two-year-old credentials have even been improved upon at three, winning both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas - at Newmarket and The Curragh. He mowed down high class opposition at Newmarket on his favoured fast ground and then displayed the ability to get out of trouble in Ireland in a manner only true top class types can, handling much softer ground in the process. He'll be hard to beat.

5

Latharnach

Facts and figures suggest clear race by race improvement on his four starts and, though he failed to justify favouritism in a 1400m Listed race on his 2015 return last month, he battled hard and was only just held by a useful opponent. This is a sharp upward movement in class however and winning hopes don't look bright.

6

Make Believe

His runaway 3 length victory over 17 rivals in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp last month immediately made him appear the main threat to Gleneagles, winner of the English and Irish equivilants, in this three-year-old clash even though he has had to be supplemented into the field. The fact that New Bay, his nearest victim at Longchamp, went on to win the French Derby in fine style has only enhanced Make Believe's Royal Ascot credentials. Good or softer ground would be a big plus.
