King's Stand Stakes – Form Comments

G1 – 1000M – Turf

1

G Force

He had a rough passage and nearly fell at one point - having travelled smoothly earlier - when an unlucky eighth in a 1000m G2 at Haydock on his 2015 debut. The G1 he landed last September at Haydock was over 1200m but the stiff nature of this track will be helpful.

2

Goldream

A progressive handicapper last season, he has won five of his 30 starts the latest coming in a G3 at Newmarket on his 2015 debut. However he didn't show the same zest at Haydock subsequently and he will need to turn the form around with some of those who finished ahead of him in that G2 dash.

3

Hot Streak

A growing reputation last year saw him start favourite for this event and he ran a really good third - just 1 1/2l adrift of Sole Power. He hasn't built on that in six starts since and can now be counted as a little disappointing, and only sixth when favourite for a G2 at Haydock last time. Best chance of a revival if the ground turns soft.

4

Jack Dexter

Only beaten 2 3/4l when seventh in this event last year. He has put up some good performances since without managing a win, and with more luck in the race he probably would have pulled off a minor shock in a G2 over this distance at Haydock last time. His prospects would be much enhanced by good ground or softer.

5

Justice Day

A powerful piece of front-running down the centre of the track saw him win a Listed event over this course and distance back in October. Another good effort came at Newmarket early last month but less fast in two subsequent starts. Slow ground would help.

6

Lancelot Du Lac

Didn't make much impact at Royal Ascot last year though competing in a 1200m handicap then. Hasn't been seen since running a couple of good races and a couple of poor races at Meydan earlier in the year. Some of his rivals look to have better qualifications for this prize.

7

Medicean Man

Joao Moreira is an interesting booking for this 11-times winner who was an outsider for this event last year but finished strongly to finish just 1 3/4l behind winner Sole Power. So far he has struggled to repeat that form since then and was behind three of these rivals in a G2 at Chantilly last time.

8

Muthmir

A rapid improver in handicaps last season, he built on an encouraging fifth on his seasonal debut when overcoming trouble in the race to poke his nose in front on the line in a 1000m G2 at Chantilly late last month. A better passage would have seen him win easier and with the stable in great form he belongs on the shortlist.

9

Pearl Secret

He produced a career best to win a G2 over this distance at Haydock last time, finishing with a powerful surge - typical tactics for him. This seven times winner has won on a fast surface but he is considered notably more effective on good or softer ground.

10

Rangali

Best when there is some ease in the ground, this French-trained colt was only narrowly beaten in the Prix de L'Abbaye de Longchamp, Longchamp's famous G1 sprint last October. He'll need to sharpen up, however, on his only start this season, at Chantilly last month.

11

Robot Boy

His winning form has come in handicaps - including at Newbury in April -and though at a sprint level there is not a big gap between good handicaps and group events, Robot Boy did not prove good enough when tried in a G2 at Chantilly last time. Unlikely to make an impact.

12

Sole Power

His excellent record in this race reads 8311 and even at the age of eight he proved his wellbeing when winning a G1 over this ideal distance at Meydan in March. You can quite easily forgive a modest last start in Ireland and if he gets fast ground he will be formidable here when he can be delivered late of what surely will be an ideally fast pace.

13

Spirit Quartz

Fifth in this speed battle back in 2012 and 18th in 2013, he is now trained in France where he has been running well in some of their top sprints without managing to enhance his record of six career wins. His record suggests that he is best on good or softer ground.

14

Stepper Point

Hadn't shown much in this event two years ago but ran a cracker this day last year as a 50-1 outsider. He pinged the gates and was always in contention, looking the likely winner until Sole Power burst through. Has occasionally been in the same form since, including a comfortable G3 success at The Curragh last September.

15

Steps

A fast-finisher who needs things to go his way in these sprints and though they didn't this day last year still managing to run 2 1/2l sixth behind Sole Power. Again a little unlucky in the "Dash" at Epsom last time, twice having to wait to make his challenge, beaten just 1 1/2l in fourth at the end. Good or softer ground would help.

16

Take Cover

Likes to race bang up with the pace and those sort of tactics saw him have a successful time in 2014 including a G2 victory at Goodwood. He also showed plenty of early pace on his return at Haydock last month but got tired at the end as race-fitter rivals passed him by. He should be sharper this time.

17

Mecca’s Angel

Her seven wins - from just 12 starts - have all come at this distance and she looked better than ever when taken to France for her 2015 debut winning a 1000m G3 at Longchamp in May and breaking the race record time with a terrific display of speed. Ground just on the soft side would be ideal.

18

Shamal Wind

Connections acted swiftly to book Ryan Moore for this mare who showed an impressive change of gears to win a G1 handicap over 1100m at Caulfield back in February. She has run well off a break in the past and is an interesting contender for this dash in which Australian raiders have often shone.

19

Wind Fire

Has won two sprints at a Listed race level and ran a terrific race in a G2 at Haydock on her latest start. She twice got stopped in her challenge before producing some real acceleration at the end to take her into third place, only 3/4l away from landing a 40-1 shock. Versatile groundwise.
