Windsor Castle Stakes – Form Comments

Listed – 1000M – Turf

1

Aragon Knight

Almost managed to make all the running in a 1000m Salisbury maiden last month, just overhauled by a 50-1 outsider then. The third horse home has enhanced the form by winning since.

2

Archimedes

Started favourite for his first two starts, running encouragingly first time but modestly second time. Fitted with a tongue-tie for his third start - earlier this month - he was quick from the gates and battled on well to win that Bath maiden, drawing clear at the end. Improving.

3

Ard San Aer

This Irish-trained colt from a top stable ran really well first time out over 1000m and then won a 1200m maiden at Leopardstown last month, travelling like the best horse in the race throughout. Slightly surprising to see him back down to 1000m for this but the stable know what they are doing.

4

Areen

Well backed to win on his first start at York, and, ridden with patience, he swooped to overtake a much more experienced colt in the closing stages. Taken to Sandown for a Listed race last month but nothing went right for him that day, and, though well beaten, it is much too soon to write off this well-regarded colt.

5

Halsall

Ran a good race first time out and was made favourite for his next start but was a dismal failure. However he  bounced back to win a small maiden with a gutsy display last month. This is a much tougher assignment and he'll probably struggle.

6

Harvard Man

Showed a lot of late speed to win a Newbury maiden over 1031m on his debut in April. Moved up to 1207m and into a conditions event - also at Newbury - for his second start but he didn't show the same flair and was a well-beaten favourite.

7

Hot Stuff

Well behind today's rival Archimedes on his debut in a modest event at Bath this month and probably here because his owners want a day out at Royal Ascot.

8

Its in the Rain

An interesting contender from a small French stable. This colt has improved race by race and surged clear of his rivals over 1100m at Marseille earlier this month.

9

Just Glamorous

Finished three lengths second to today's rival Sahreej at Chepstow on his recent debut and, though likely to progess from that, would cause a big shock by winning here.

10

Lathom

Nothing wrong with either of his starts, both over this distance at Beverley, with a first time win and a good second to First Selection so it will be interesting to see how that colt gets on in the earlier Coventry Stakes.

11

Nelspruit

Good efforts on all three starts though the figures don't suggest that he has improved much. An odds-on favourite when scoring at Goodwood on his second start but mowed down by smart Buratino in a 1200m Listed event at Epsom more recently, beaten 6l. Probably happiest back at this distance.

12

Orvar

From a stable that are champions at sending out two-year-old winners though they haven't had much luck in this in recent years. However Orvar was quite an impressive winner on his only start, accelerating clear of his rivals over this distance at Salisbury last month.

13

Ravenhoe

Would need to improve rapidly on a dismal last start when he faded fast in a 1200m dash for which he was favourite. However he had done much better earlier and jockey Silvestre de Sousa has been riding a lot of winners for this stable.

14

Roll On Rory

He doesn't look the easiest ride but managed to win his second start, under sympathetic handling - at Carlisle last month. However the form of that win has not been enhanced since, and he'll be an outsider here.

15

Sahreej

A winner on his third and latest start where he started favourite, having had the best previous form. Kicked into an early lead he had too many gears for his opponents in that Chepstow maiden.

16

Silver Wings

He showed a lot of speed to win at Windsor on his debut and, in keeping with his stable's usual policy, has been kept busy since. His next two starts were good but he faded out in a Listed contest at Sandown last time having raced too keenly for much of that contest.

17

Sir Theodore

Showed little on his first start last month but just a week later he ran a much more promising race, pestering the eventual winner until fended off in the last 200m of that Nottingham maiden.

18

Soapy Aitken

Has a big home reputation and that has been justified with two wins out of two so far, starting favourite each time. Most recently he still showed inexperience during the race but once his rider had given him a crack with the whip he accelerated nicely in that Windsor novices' event. He belongs on the shortlist.

19

Stamp Hill

Has run two respectable races in Ireland so far, but neither have suggested that he is about to win a hot event at Royal Ascot like this.

20

Steady Pace

The impressive winner of an Ascot maiden first time out, especially so since the form of that event has been notably enhanced since. In a Listed race at Sandown subsequently he couldn't get any cover out wide and will probably be better suited to competing in a big field with a strong pace, as is expected here.

21

Washington DC

Looks to have plenty of class and, though unable to quite cope with Round Two in a Listed race at the Curragh last time there was little disgrace in that as Round Two is the likely favourite for the G2 Coventry Stakes earlier on. Possibilities.

22

Wedge

Improved considerably on his first start when scoring over this distance on an all-weather surface earlier this month. His stable have two others in this, and jockey bookings would suggest that they are preferred.

23

Caledonian Gold

Beaten a long way on her only start and surely has no chance here.

24

Dream Dreamer

A bitterly disappointing favourite last time perhaps that run coming too soon after her previous run where she had showed lots of speed to pulverise her opposition over 1009m at Windsor.

25

Opal Tiara

She has run well on both her starts, winning on the all-weather at Wolverhampton  first time and doing even better at Beverley when she couldn't quite manage to overcome a well-regarded filly but the pair finished clear of the third. She's got plenty of speed.

26

Ruby Notion

Appears to possess a lot of speed, this filly having blitzed clear of her seven rivals in a 900m maiden on the dirt at Churchill Downs last month, her only start. Massively different conditions here but the trainer’s record in this ensures she needs plenty of respect.

27

Socialites Red

She has run well in both her starts and ran way above her odds of 40-1 when finishing third in a conditions event at Beverley last month, though on facts and figures she still needs to do a lot more to figure here.
