Wokingham Stakes (Handicap) – Form Comments

1200m - Turf

1

Intransigent

Has won seven of his 38 starts and is effective at Ascot where he has won over 1400m, and also ran well in a 1400m handicap at this meeting last year. He needs to be delivered late which won't be an easy tactical proposition here.

2

Louis The Pious

Only twelfth in this race two years ago after racing too prominently but he beat 26 rivals in a 1400m handicap at this meeting last year. Not at his best in two starts in 2015 but he often comes good on the big day, and his stable is formidable.

3

Lancelot Du Lac

Beaten 4 1/4L when tenth of 18 in Tuesday's G1 King's Stakes over 1000m on Tuesday, quite a good effort after a break. All his winning has come over this longer distance or further so perhaps he'll get closer to the money today.

4

Watchable

Not quick enough to win a G3 on fast ground and over 1000m last time, but not beaten far and the fact that the winner of that race went on to win the G1 King's Stand Stakes on Tuesday certainly enhances the form. Still unexposed and from a high-achieving stable.

5

Ruwaiyan

Well beaten on his only previous start at Ascot though that was over further than this. However he showed he has the speed for this trip when a smooth winner at Goodwood two starts back.

6

Robert Le Diable

A rare French-trained contender in a Royal Ascot handicap. A seven times  winner in France from 1000m to 1400m, he has been in very good form in recent starts on the Paris tracks though almost always races on soft ground there.

7

Dinkum Diamond

He finished third of 26 in this event two years ago and arrives here in quite good form, having finished third in a 1200m Listed race at Windsor last time in which the course record time was broken.

8

Highland Acclaim

Came with a well-timed late surge to win a handicap over this course and distance last August. Supporters will hope he can return to that sort of form after two modest efforts this year.

9

Rivellino

A specialist at this distance with all his five wins coming over it, and also his two previous ventures to Ascot have also been fine performances notably when finishing 2 1/4L third of 28 in this dash last year. Has had a break since a below-par run in April.

10

Blaine

Had a poor three-year-old season but bounced back last year with two good wins. However he has again been disappointing so far this season so a win here would come as a shock.

11

Zarwaan

A lightly raced gelding who has mostly competed over further than this - although his only win came in a maiden over this trip - including when seventh of 26 in a 1400m handicap here at Ascot in May.

12

Ninjago

Came with a storming run from way off the pace to win over this course and distance back in 2013. He has run some less good races here since though he did look close to his best when third at Goodwood last time.

13

Interception

A strong late surge took her into second place in a Listed event over this distance at Haydock last month, a career best effort on her first start of the season. She also ran a fine race on her only previous visit to Ascot.

14

Algar Lad

From a much respected stable that have already tasted big-race Royal Ascot success this week. He has run well in all starts this season, in winning form most recently when accelerating impressively to beat 16 rivals in a hot handicap at York.

15

Intrinsic

From the stable that won the King's Stand Stakes here on Tuesday but the lightly-raced Intrinsic - the winner of four of his nine starts - runs here without a previous start this season. However he won - over this course and distance - on his first start last season.

16

Kickboxer

A small but tenacious gelding who has made an encouraging start to 2015, most recently when a running-on third of 13 in a handicap over this distance at Newmarket last month.

17

Gamesome

A lightly-raced colt who is having just his eighth start here. However his run in a 1200m Newmarket handicap early last month was eye-catching, running on well after suffering a troubled passage in the race.

18

Polybius

A small horse though bred to stay much further than this. Weak in the betting for his only start this season, and he ran out of steam in the closing stages looking as though he needed that run. His three career wins have all come at this distance.

19

Divine

Trainer Mick Channon strongly fancied her first time out this season, in a handicap over this distance at Windsor and she duly surged clear of her rivals. She performed well in a good Listed contest at the same track subsequently with her best chances here on fast ground.

20

Green Door

His three career wins have come over 1000m and no real evidence so far that he is as good over this longer distance. His best start this season came when he made up plenty of ground in the closing stages when third over 1031m at Newbury in April.

21

Dutch Masterpiece

The last of his six wins came in a G3 over 1000m at The Curragh in 2013. He has had plenty of problems since then, racing just four times  and well beaten on his two starts this season.

22

Rene Mathis

Mostly racing over 1400m but last year he did win a good handicap over this distance at Newmarket. He ran quite well last time but he does not appear especially well handicapped and fast ground would not be helpful.

23

Suzi's Connoisseur

Wearing a hood for the first time he ran a solid race when eighth of 26 in a 1400m handicap here in May on just his second start for a shrewd stable who like to target big handicaps such as this.

24

Basil Berry

Has won his last two starts and last time out he made his second visit to Ascot a winning one when holding off a host of closers to cling on bravely in that handicap over this distance. He has had a mini break since then, but that suits him best says his trainer.

25

Huntsmans Close

Had some unlucky runs last season but finished on a high note when winning a prestigious handicap over this distance at Ayr. And he very nearly won a 1200m handicap at Newmarket on his first start this season despite challenging on the least favourable part of the track.

26

Barracuda Boy

A five-times winner and a specialist at this distance these days he arrives here after running a cracking second - at odds of 33-1 - in a good 1200m handicap at Newmarket late last month.

27

Tatlisu

His three starts this season have all been fine efforts over this distance including victory over 20 rivals at Doncaster. Although he has never been to Ascot before this has been his target for some time.

28

Related

His latest starts have come on an all-weather surface, most  recently when winning a 1200m handicap at Kempton in March. There might be better to come as he is relatively unexposed over this distance, having mostly competed over further. His jockey is riding in great form currently.

Reserves

29

Poyle Vinnie

Hasn't been seen since a disappointing effort when favourite over 1000m on an all-weather track back in January. He has won over this distance on a turf surface but seems happiest on a slow racing surface.

30

Humidor

This seven-times winner can miss the break but despite that his best form has come over 1000m, and he won over that trip here at Ascot way back in 2010. This veteran may struggle at 1200m here unless the ground turned soft.

31

Discussiontofollow

His only previous run here saw him victorious in a 1000m handicap last season, delivered with a strong late surge. He is also effective at this longer journey and his only start this season was quite encouraging.
