1

Rawaki

He has tended to run best at this time of the season and he looked to be coming right to his best when a close second in 2400m Listed race at Goodwood last month. Possibilities if he handles this distance, though some rain might help.

2

Marzocco

He finished third in a Listed race over 3200m at this meeting last season and also finished fifth in two G1's over shorter though not seen since down the field at Meydan in March. He's got the class to figure but has he got the stamina?

3

Longshadow

A proven stayer, and last year he finished a close runner-up (at odds of 33-1) in one of the other real marathon tests in the UK, a handicap at Pontefract. He's a useful handicapper whose recent starts hint that he's still on an upward curve.

4

Mawaqeet

Has won over this sort of distance over hurdles but that doesn't always mean that a horse has the stamina for the faster-pace of a Flat race. He comes here in good form, having won a well-contested Newcastle handicap late last month.

5

Ofcoursewecan

Hasn't won on the Flat for over two years and his recent starts over hurdles have not been very encouraging. Likely to start at huge odds.

6

Oriental Fox

A good class handicapper despite only having won three of his 31 starts. He also seems to have a fair amount of stamina as he finished a respectable fifth in last year's G1 Ascot Gold Cup over 4000m. He's been absent for nearly a year.

7

Pilgrims Rest

Beaten in his last 17 starts though he did briefly look like putting that record straight when kicked clear at Chester last time, only to be reeled back late on. Needs to prove that he can handle a big step up in distance.

8

Teak

Has the stamina for this test and won another marathon over 4200m at Goodwood last summer. A nine-times winner - who comes here off some good efforts this season - his main requirement is fast ground. The faster the better.

9

Times Up

A winner of ten of his 41 starts during a distinguished career though now reaching the veteran stage. He has lots of class and has won three times at a G2 level, most recently over 3600m at Doncaster in September 2013. He has struggled to find his best form recently, but this has been the target for a while.

10

Vif Argent

Having his first start for his current stable after winning a minor hurdle event. He is quite effective in winning at a modest level in that sphere, but will surely struggle here.

11

Wicklow Brave

Bound to be well fancied for this coming from the successful stable that won Tuesday's Ascot Stakes. A very effective hurdler - with winning form at a high level - he smoothly won both his Flat starts in Ireland last month as a preparation for this.

12

Brave Richard

He has won all his three starts on the Flat, though under the rules of jump racing. Not a usual preparation for an event like this and, though he is clearly smart, he might not be up to this class.

13

Le Maitre Chat

The winner of one of his eight starts and a gradually progressing handicapper who has occasionally shown a quirky temperament. He was fitted with sheepskin cheek pieces last time running a fair fourth over 2800m at Goodwood. Stamina to prove.

14

Taws

She is a four-times winner who is renowned for her consistency, always seeming to try her best. Two starts back she finished a close third in a handicap over 3200m at this track. She's not tried this distance yet but it might be OK.
