Celebrating the 18th Anniversary of Reunification - 1 July, Sha Tin Racecourse

28/06/2015

In celebration of the 18th Anniversary of Hong Kong’s reunification with China, The Hong Kong Jockey Club will stage the Hong Kong Reunification Raceday at Sha Tin Racecourse on Wednesday, 1 July.

Adding to the carnival atmosphere, a variety of free activities will be held at Sha Tin Racecourse.  Racegoers can have their faces painted with the HKSAR’s floral emblem, the bauhinia, as well as with various horse racing-themed patterns. Specially-designed tattoo stickers will also be available at game booths, which are ideal when posing for instant photos.

A highlight of the day will be the Hong Kong Reunification Cup, which will be run as Race 8. Financial Secretary of the HKSAR, The Hon John Tsang Chun-wah, will join Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Yang Jian and Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR Song Ru’an, to present trophies to the winning Owner, Trainer and Jockey. The Hong Kong Police Silver Band will play the National Anthem during the trophy presentation to add to the festive atmosphere.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup will follow as Race 9. The race, which is being run for the second time, celebrates the strong ties that have developed between Guangdong Province and Hong Kong since the implementation of the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA).  This is in addition to the Club’s co-hosting of the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games equestrian events and its sponsorship of the final leg of the 2014 Longines China Tour in Guangzhou, both of which have laid a solid foundation for Guangdong-Hong Kong cooperation in equestrian development. The Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup is hence an ideal opportunity to showcase the fruitful exchange in sports and culture between Guangdong and Hong Kong.
