The Hong Kong Jockey Club recently purchased five horses at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for a total outlay of 1,120,000 guineas (HK$13.7 million).
The auction’s prestige portion, the three-day Book 1, got underway on 6 October and the Club stepped in to buy two attractive youngsters. The first, Lot 81, is by Exceed And Excel, who numbers Amber Sky and Rewarding Hero among his successful Hong Kong progeny. The bay colt, knocked down for 200,000gns, is a half-brother to the G1 Queensland Derby winner Dariana and hails from a family that has produced a host of top-class runners, among them Kingman, Oasis Dream and Beat Hollow.
The session’s other purchase, Lot 106, also cost 200,000gns. The bay colt is by the UK champion sprinter Kyllachy and is out of a full-sister to the G2-winning and G1-placed miler Spacious.
The final day of Book 1 (8 October) saw the Club go to 220,000gns for another Exceed And Excel colt, this time a full-brother to Supreme Falcon, a four-time winner at 1200m in Hong Kong.
Book 2 (12-14 October), the select portion of the four-part yearling sale - Europe’s largest - saw the Club secure two more athletic individuals. Lot 712 is by Zoffany, the UK and Ireland’s leading first-season sire, out of a four-time winner from the family of European champion sprinter Sheikh Albadou. The bay colt was bought for 240,000gns.
The final purchase, Lot 1305, is a 260,000gns Kodiac half-brother to the Listed-winning sprinter Singeur.
