Meydan Sprint - Form Comments

04/03/2016

G3 - 1000m – Turf

1

Mirza

Has not made much impact in his two attempts at Meydan sprint prizes so far - including when 9th behind Sir Maximilian in a handicap here last month. The main problem is surely that he really needs a softish surface and even if it rains in Dubai, this grass track dries very quickly. Although trained in Newmarket his major successes have come in France - including twice at G3 level - where the ground tends to be softer.

2

Medicean Man

Three of his 12 career wins have come in handicaps here at Meydan, two at this distance. Although he has not competed at a Group race level here, he has plenty of experience of that back in the UK. That includes when Joao Moreira almost landed a 50-1 shock win on him, caught in the final strides to go down by a short-head to Goldream in last June's King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

3

Sole Power

This popular old sprinter has competed in this event four times, twice finishing second. He had no luck last year but went on to gain his first Meydan victory in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night, able to produce his trademark late surge that day. Not seen at his best on his last two starts latterly at Sha Tin in December, and Al Quoz Sprint is surely again his main target though purely on ratings his chance here is solid.

4

Taayel

Had some quite classy form as a two-year-old in the UK, but has been very lightly raced since and has clearly had plenty of problems. Beaten a long way in a handicap on dirt on his only Meydan start and though this return to grass may be helpful, a win here would come as a big shock.

5

Stepper Point

An eight times winner whose career best performance came when landing a G2 over this distance at The Curragh in Ireland last July. He showed plenty of speed on the far side of the track though couldn't sustain his effort in the closing stages of that 1000m dash here last month won by Sir Maximillian, beaten 3L in sixth place. He has a good attitude, and fast ground suits nicely.

6

Krypton Factor

In fantastic form here at Meydan way back in 2012, including victory in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen. Not nearly the force he once was however and he has been soundly beaten in all his races on dirt here this year, which may be why connections are trying him on the grass and back in distance here. And he does have some good grass form in Europe earlier in his career, so his supporters will live in hope that a revival is possible.

7

Toscanini

His three wins have all come over 1200m. However he made a good first attempt at Meydan's 1000m sprint trip when only beaten 2 1/4L into fifth by Sir Maximilian here last month, having just too much ground to make up in the closing stages. He was giving weight all round then which adds to the promise of that effort.

8

Jungle Cat

Interesting in that all his eleven starts so far - including his two wins - have been beyond this 1000m. Apparent excuses (a shoe came off) at Royal Ascot last June and he returned at Meydan in January winning a 1200m handicap, outspeeding all his 14 rivals for a cosy 3 3/4L victory. No surprise to see him trying the 1000m speed dash here now.

9

Goldream

Won two of Europe's most prestigious G1 sprints over 1000m last year - the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot (as a 20-1 outsider) and the Prix de L'Abbaye at Longchamp. He is a pure speed horse who should be suited by this track, and good or fast ground is a pre-requisite so there will surely be no problems there. Good chances if at his peak after the break.

10

Sir Maximilian

Not the most consistent and was unfancied for this event last year after some modest shows but delivered a strong late challenge that got him the winners' money. He confirmed his liking for the grass track here when winning a Meydan handicap last month, tracking the speed and pouncing late. He has never won two consecutive races before, but he's clearly in good shape.

11

Fityaan

Has lots of experience of this track and this will be his 16th Meydan start, though that has only produced one success -a shock victory in a modest handicap over this distance way back in 2013. Supporters will hope that he is in the same form as when second to the classy Ertijaal here in February. Not so good in two subsequent starts.
