Jockey G Lerena

23/03/2016

At the Sha Tin racemeeting conducted last Sunday, 20 March 2016, Jockey G Lerena pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding and was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday, 7 April 2016 on which day he may resume race riding.  During the inquiry, Jockey Lerena requested the Racing Stewards defer the commencement date of the suspension until after the Happy Valley racemeeting which is scheduled to be conducted on Thursday, 31 March 2016.  During this period, two Hong Kong racemeetings are scheduled to be conducted.

The Racing Stewards have received an application from Jockey Lerena for the commencement date of his suspension from riding in races to be amended to allow him to fulfil race riding engagements at the Turffontein racemeeting in South Africa on Saturday, 2 April 2016.  At this racemeeting, the following Grade 1 races are scheduled to be conducted:-

  • SA Classic
  • SA Fillies Classic
  • H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes

As the Racing Stewards would have permitted Jockey Lerena to fulfil these race riding engagements had they been made aware of the commitments when ruling on the period of suspension, the commencement date of the suspension would have been such that allowed Jockey Lerena to accept race riding engagements on 2 April 2016.

After due consideration it has been decided that Jockey Lerena’s period of suspension from riding in races is now to commence on Sunday, 3 April 2016 with the expiry date remaining as Thursday, 7 April 2016 on which day he may resume race riding.  Two Hong Kong racemeetings will be held during the revised period of suspension which is consistent with the previous ruling.
