1200m – Turf

1

Ashpan Sam

He has only won two races in the past couple of years, this race in 2014 and 2015, leading from wire to wire each time. The ground was fast this time last year but these slower conditions are even more suitable though this is his first start of the year (unlike when he won this the last two years) and he is with a different stable. Interesting.

2

Shared Equity

The latest of his four wins came when surged clear of a big field of handicappers over this distance at York last October. He has run quite well in two Listed races and one handicap since then and is probably better over this 1200m than the 1400m last time. Having his 18th career start but first visit to Epsom.

3

Barracuda Boy

Running some decent races without winning on the all-weather lately though was back on turf last time when he led from the gates but faded near the end in a conditions race over this trip. Although he has won on an easy surface his trainer has always considered him to be a fast ground horse.

4

Perfect Pasture

The fitting of a visor made a big difference earlier in his career when he achieved the rare feat of winning six successive races. Doesn't win so often now and has become inconsistent though on his day is very speedy as he showed when romping to a 4L victory over this distance on soft ground three starts back.

5

George Bowen

On his only previous visit here in a 1400m handicap at this meeting last year, he had a miserable passage but he ran on and he did look to handle the track. He had some good winning form over this distance last season and his sole start of 2016 can easily be forgiven as he was racing on the unfavoured side of the track.

6

Iseemist

Although she didn't make much impact in this event last year, she has enjoyed most of her career victories here (two course and distance wins) or at similarly configurated tracks. Unlucky not to win on one of her three starts this season after being badly squeezed at the start, and no surprise if she runs a big race here.

7

Charles Molson

Doesn't win very often (just twice from 24 starts) and his two starts this season have not been very inspiring. He is very effective over this distance and has won on an easy racing surface but other rivals would appeal as being more favourably handicapped.

8

Ghalib

From a stable that have been short of winners lately but Ghalib could change that if he can build on his excellent first start of 2016 - a clear career-best effort - when getting to within a head of winning a well-contested Newmarket handicap last month. That was on fast ground, though both his turf victories have been on a slow surface.

9

Boomerang Bob

He hasn't won this year but has never been far from the winners' money including when only just beaten in a 800m dash on the frozen lake at St Moritz in Switzerland. However it is a bit worrying that he has only been victorious in one of his 26 starts on a grass surface.

10

Zanetto

Has been beaten in his last 19 starts though some good runs during that period mean that his handicap rating remains challenging. However he did run a really good race - his best for a long time - on his first start for his new stable when a close fourth of 18 at York last month. Possibilities here on that evidence.

11

Arctic Feeling

Well down the field in this sprint in 2014 but a subsequent win over course and distance - on soft ground - revealed that he is perfectly happy at Epsom. Got the space at the right time when winning a handicap on his first start this season but has struggled twice since and may be a shade high in the weights for now.

12

Joey’s Destiny

Having been beaten in his last 12 starts he is gradually easing down the handicap with his close fifth in a handicap over this distance last time being quite an encouraging sign. Having his first start at Epsom but he has put in some solid performances at Goodwood which has similarities to this track.

13

Valley Of Fire

Won the first of his eight starts but having failed when then tried in Group race company he was lowered into handicap grade where he has also proved expensive to follow so far. Hard to fancy though interesting perhaps that his top stable are persevering with him.

14

Englishman

In great form earlier in the season winning successive handicaps over this distance at Windsor and Newmarket. Unsuited by the slow pace - according to his trainer - in his next race and possibly racing on the disadvantaged side of the track at Goodwood most recently.

15

Secret Missile

He won on fast ground earlier his career but jockeys who have ridden him more recently claim he wants a soft surface. He sprang a shock 33-1 victory over this distance late last season where he seem advantaged by flying out of the stalls and grabbing the early lead. Well beaten on both starts in 2016.

16

Waseem Faris

His six wins (from a busy 72 race career) have all come over shorter than this but no reason why that should be much of a problem. It is a long time since he last competed at this track but he did run quite well on his most recent start and much will depend on how fast he is from the gates as he is best when leading.

17

Blaine

Hasn't won since August 2014 and is now competing off the lowest handicap rating of his career. He was only 3Ll behind the winner when seventh of 15 in a handicap sprint over 1000m on his most recent start and that must have encouraged his connections that they have a chance here.
