Hong Kong Jockey Club active at Tattersalls

18/10/2016

The Hong Kong Jockey Club recently purchased five colts out of the three-day Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 (4 October to 6 October), Europe’s premier auction of its type, for a total of 895,000 guineas (approximately HK$9.49 million), and augmented those buys with two smart colts out of Book 2 (10 to 12 October).

The final Book 1 session saw the Club go to 300,000 guineas to secure an athletic son of Dark Angel, a sire that has made his mark with talented sprinters, notably Europe’s current speed queen, the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes (1000m) heroine Mecca’s Angel, as well as Lethal Force, winner of the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1200m) and G1 July Cup (1200m). Lot 410, a grey, like his sire, is a full-brother to the speedy Listed-winning and G2-placed three-year-old Log Out Island. He is from the family of G1-winning sprinter Bold Edge.

Also during that Thursday session, the Club bought Lot 520A, a Bernardini half-brother to North American G3 winner Praying for Cash, runner-up in the G1 Haskell Invitational (1800m).  The hammer came down at 105,000 guineas.

Two days earlier, a good-moving Exchange Rate colt with solid Black Type in his family, Lot 62, passed through the ring and the Club was on hand to snap him up for 70,000 guineas.

A Kodiac youngster followed later in the day for 200,000 guineas. Lot 158 is out of Lilium, a Listed-winning half-sister to G1 Middle Park Stakes (1200m) winner Lujain being a daughter of the G1-placed sprinter/miler Satin Flower.

The Club paid a shade more for its one purchase on the middle day of Book 1, 220,000 guineas. Lot 348 is a colt from the family of G1 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, as well as G1 Preakness Stakes hero Pine Bluff and his G1-winning brother Demons Begone. The strong Fastnet Rock youngster is out of the Storm Cat mare Stormy Blessing, a full-sister to the G3 winner Brave Tin Soldier.

During Book 2 at Park Paddocks, on 11 October, the Jockey Club bid successfully for a precocious Harbour Watch colt, Lot 835. The athletic bay hails from a good black type family, being a half-brother to the Mount Nelson-sired duo Hors De Combat and Stroll Patrol, G2 and G3-placed, respectively. His second dam, the classy juvenile Maid For Walking, produced the G1 Woodford Reserve winner Stroll.

The Club completed its Tattersalls purchases the following day with an attractive Iffraaj colt from a high-class, speedy and precocious family. Lot 1130 is out of an unraced half-sister to G1-winning juvenile Arcano, from the family of G1 Prix de l’Abbaye (1000m) winner Gilt Edge Girl.
