STAR OF PATCH - 30 January 2017 - Race 5 Lucky Star Handicap

26/01/2017

The Stewards have interviewed Trainer P O’Sullivan and Jockey Z Purton regarding Mr O’Sullivan’s application to add Sheepskin Cheek Pieces to the gear carried by STAR OF PATCH, a declared starter in the Lucky Star Handicap (Race 5, Class 4, 1200 Metres) to be conducted at the Sha Tin race meeting on Monday, 30 January 2017. STAR OF PATCH was successful in its most recent race start over the same course and distance on 1 January 2017 when racing with a Ring Bit only.

Mr O’Sullivan and Jockey Purton explained that in its most recent race start, particularly in the Home Straight, STAR OF PATCH, as instanced in the Incident Report from the relevant race, hung out and was difficult to ride when placed under pressure. Mr O’Sullivan said that as a result of the horse’s racing manners, he had applied Sheepskin Cheek Pieces to the horse in its subsequent trackwork and in a barrier trial on 20 January 2017, and both him and Jockey Purton are satisfied that the addition of this piece of equipment will assist the horse in racing more tractably.

After considering the merits of Mr O’Sullivan’s application and having regard to the horse’s racing manners in its most recent race start and subsequent barrier trial, the Stewards have approved the gear change. The horse will therefore carry Sheepskin Cheek Pieces and a Ring Bit in the stated race.
