G3 - 1600m – Dirt

1

Stormardal

Has won four of his last five starts over 1600m on the dirt here, last time when easily defying top weight in a handicap in December. Moving outside handicap class for the first time at Meydan, but worth it as he seems better than ever.

2

Power Blade

A star in Korea, including winning all legs of their Triple Crown. He has run creditably on both his starts at Meydan - including at this distance - but facts and figures suggest that a few of these rivals may prove too strong.

3

Stunned

Does look a better horse at Meydan this year than last, though he is usually seen over shorter distances than this and in handicap company. His victory over 1400m here last month at least suggests that he arrives here in good shape.

4

Ross

Hasn't got a lot of early speed but he does stay, and his running on second in this race in 2016 was close to a career-best performance. Runner-up to Stunned over 1400m here last time, but may be better suited to this extra distance than him.

5

Heavy Metal

The winner of ten of his 51 starts, this tough operator thrives on racing.  At least as good as ever with a front-running success under this rider last time, setting fractions that suited and, though he doesn't have to lead, those tactics may well be used again here.

6

Lindo Amor

Had some smart form in Argentina but has struggled so far at Meydan, showing encouragement first time despite an awkward start but getting hammered in two subsequent outings. With something to prove now.

7

Brex Drago

Enjoyed lots of success on grass in Italy.  Promise on all Meydan starts especially when switching to the dirt last time, 5L third to Heavy Metal despite having to race wide. May progress further.

8

Alabaster

Won over 2000m on the dirt here two starts back, needing strong handling from his rider. More recently he led for some of the way in a race that probably wasn't run to suit him still managing third. Talented even if this drop back in trip is a concern.

9

Polar River

Won her first four starts at Meydan, looking a potential star. However despite looking to hold most of the cards on her last three starts she has been beaten each time, running dismally the last twice.

10

Le Bernardin

Has won four times over this course and distance, including the same G2 twice - most recently in January. Favourite for this race last year but wasn't at his best whilst a worry today is the difficult gate for his ideal front-running tactics. Chances nonetheless.

11

Nathr

Staying close to the speed his victory here two starts back looked like a career-best performance. He again ran well last time but couldn't cope with the relentless gallop of Heavy Metal.

12

Ennobled Friend

Ran well above expectations when second to a stunning winner in a G3 over this course and distance last month. However, his 0-13 Meydan record will leave most race-fans looking in different directions.

13

Shamaal Nibras

An occasional winner in the UAE but not at Meydan when he has never looked likely to land a winning strike in six attempts. He appears to have the smallest chance of trainer Doug Watson's four contenders in this race.
