Hussonet gelding sets new benchmark in strong night of bidding at Hong Kong International Sale

17/03/2017

A son of Hussonet broke Hong Kong International Sale records as the headline act among 29 lots sent through the ring at Sha Tin Racecourse on Friday night (17 March).

The Australian-bred gelding, catalogued as Lot 16 and out of the South African mare Almah, was hammered down to Peter Lau for HK$10.5 million, a new peak for any Hong Kong sale, besting the previous record of HK$9 million set in March 2012.

The record was one of a number of strong results across the board. This year’s group sold for an aggregate of HK$130.9 million at an average of HK$4.51 million, up 7.6 per cent on last year’s average of HK$4.19 million from 24 lots.

Nine horses reached at least HK$5 million, with Lot 24 – a French-bred gelding by Holy Roman Emperor out of Linamix mare Lapland – selling for HK$9 million to Liu Yu Wen, owner of last year’s sale topper Jing Jing Win.

Mr. Anthony Kelly, the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Executive Director of Racing Business and Operations said: “We are very pleased with tonight’s results which clearly exhibited the enthusiasm of our Owners and their recognition of the quality bloodstock sourced by the Club from the world’s top sales.”

The Hong Kong International Sale was held in a night-time slot for the second consecutive year and was preceded by a cocktail reception for guests.

“Following last year’s success in an evening format, the Hong Kong International Sale has continued its growth as an elegant event for our Owners. This is a unique setting for a thoroughbred sale and the exciting journey of ownership begins anew tonight,” said Mr. Kelly.

“Last year’s International Sale produced a BMW Hong Kong Derby runner in Pakistan Star, who has already made a profit in a racing career spanning just nine months and represents the promise of any purchaser anywhere. That’s what we want for our Owners – to provide them with the chance to chase a dream. We look forward to what these horses will achieve in the future and wish the best of luck to their new connections.”
