South African Jockey Callan Murray

To assist connections in their choice of jockey for the Sha Tin race meeting to be conducted on Sunday, 21 May 2017, the Club has arranged for South African Jockey Callan Murray to be available to accept race riding engagements at the stated race meeting.  The Licensing Committee will, in the coming days, consider an application submitted by Jockey Murray to be granted a Club Jockey’s licence until the conclusion of the current racing season.

Callan Murray is one of the emerging young jockeys in South Africa and achieved a career highlight last weekend when riding 3 individual Grade 1 winners at the Champions Day race meeting at Turffontein Racecourse, namely DEO JUVENTE in the Premier’s Champions Trophy, RAFEEF in the Computaform Sprint and MUSTAAQEEM in the SA Nursery. Jockey Murray’s previously rode the Mike de Kock trained HEAVENLY BLUE to win the Grade 1 SA Classic on 1 April 2017.

Having graduated to the senior riding ranks earlier this year, Callan Murray (20 years) enjoyed a highly successful apprenticeship having been crowned South African Champion Apprentice Jockey during the 2015/2016 racing season. He has 234 career wins to his credit which includes wins in Australia when attached to the stables of Trainer David Hayes.

Jockey Murray has advised that he is able to ride at 117 lbs allowing him to accept race riding engagements on horses weighted at 115 lbs with the allowable overweight.
