Profiles of indicated Macau jockeys

Cahill, Michael (Thunder Bird) 38-year-old M Cahill started apprenticeship at the age of 15 in New South Wales and became a jockey when he was 21. By then he had achieved 4 Champion Apprentice's and 2 Champion Jockey's titles. He rode regularly in Sydney where he landed winners for top trainers such as Neville Begg, Theo Green, Jack Denham, and Ray Guy. In 1996, Cahill moved to Gold Coast, Queensland. Since then, he has ridden winners in group races in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, including Group 1 winner 2001 Doomben 10,000 Race on Falvelon and Group 2 winners such as Todman Slipper Trial and Carlton Cup. In 2001, Cahill represented Australia in the Macau International Jockeys Invitation Races. Aside from riding at home in Australia, Cahill has also ridden in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and England. Cahill started his stint in Macau last September and is currently the leading jockey with 52 wins as at 25 January 2004 meeting. His minimum riding weight is 118 lbs.  
Didham, John (Gibson) New Zealand Jockey John Didham is now 35. Coming from a family of racing, he began riding in 1986 in Melbourne. After becoming a senior jockey, he rode all around Australia and New Zealand as well as in Singapore and Malaysia. He was granted a Visiting Jockey's Licence to ride in Macau the first time in 1996. In his first season (96/97) here, Jockey Didham won the Champion Jockey title with 75 wins and went on to capture the premiership twice again in 97/98 and 2000/01 racing seasons. During his 6 years career in Macau, he has ridden over 400 winners including some of the most important races such as the Macau Star of the Sand Stakes and Macau Cup in 2000/01 and 2001/02 racing season, the Spring Trophy, Winter Trophy and EEG Gold Cup in 2000/01 and STDM Cup in 2001/02 racing season. His minimum riding weight is 118 lbs.  

Helfenbein, Andreas

36-year-old A Helfenbein started apprenticeship in 1983 and won the Champion Apprentice's title for the following 3 years. Then in 1985, he was granted a jockey's licence. In the past 20 years, aside from riding at home in Germany, he has also ridden in Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Great Britain and France. Since 1990, Helfenbein has finished in the top-ten on the Jockeys Premiership. For the last ten racing seasons, Helfenbein has amassed close to 700 winners out of over 5,800 rides, with a total prizemoney of over 2.4 million Euro and 9.8 million DM (approximately HKD 58 million). His major wins include 11 group races and over 50 listed races. Helfenbein has been riding in Macau since December 2003, and is currently eighth on the Jockeysˇ¦ List with 18 wins as at 25 January 2004 racemeeting. His minimum riding weight is 117 lbs.  
Lao, W H (Black Avalanche) Native to Macau is 29-year-old W H Lao. In 1990, Lao joined the Macau Jockey Club apprentice training course and started riding in races the following year. In all the time as an apprentice, Lao did nothing but to astonish the racing community with his brilliant talents in riding. He was 3 time Champion Apprentice out of the 4 years that he was an apprentice. Lao went on to become a senior jockey in 1994 maintaining an outstanding race record and at the same time, kept polishing his riding skills. In every subsequent season, Lao was able to rank top 3 among Chinese jockeys and also to stay in one of the top positions of the Jockeys championship.   Besides riding locally in Macau where he is well established, Lao also rides overseas. In 1999, he represented Macau in the Jockeys Invitation Races at the Mauritius Turf Club. He rode quite a few times in Singapore and came home with 3 winners in 1996: the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Magic Millions Cup and Raffles Cup. In 2000, he had the honour of riding in the rich international event Singapore Airlines International Cup. Other countries Lao has ridden in are South Africa, Japan, India and Australia. His minimum riding weight is 116 lbs.  
Segeon, Cedric (Happy Tops) 21-year-old Frenchman Segeon started as an apprentice in 2000 and gained the Champion Apprentice title one year later. In 2002, he was granted a Jockeyˇ¦s Licence. Apart from France, he has also ridden in Tunisia and Belgium. Segeon has amassed over 70 winners including 5 big handicaps and places in Listed Races out of over 1,000 rides. Segeon has been riding in Macau since December 2002. In the 2002/03 racing season, his major wins were the Macau Derby, the Chairmanˇ¦s Challenge Cup and the Sing Pao Macau Cup. Segeon is currently third on the Jockeysˇ¦ List with 36 wins as at 27 January 2004 racemeeting. His minimum riding weight is 118 lbs.  
Soumillon, Christophe (Analyst) 22-year-old French Jockey Christophe Soumillon started riding in 1997 when he was just 16 and won his first race in November the same year. In May 2000, he landed his 100th winner at Saint-Cloud. This achievement was further boosted by another 4 winners on the same day. Among his group I winners, Soumillon has won the French Derby, the French 2000 Guineas and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

Soumillon has ridden in many countries overseas including Malaysia, USA, Japan, England, Macau and Hong Kong. When he was still in his apprenticeship, he rode for one month in Malaysia where he won his 70th race and became a fully-fledged Jockey. In 2000 he rode for one month in Japan, where he fetched 6 winners out of 50 races including 2 stakes. Soumillon also rode in the Epsom Derby and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes in Royal Ascot. Soumillon rode in Macau as Club Jockey in the 2001/02 racing season, and had 33 wins and 42 placings out of 144 rides. His minimum riding weight is 116 lbs.
