Jockey Club helps Chu Hai College build new campus to provide students with further study options
The opening ceremony of the new main campus of Chu Hai College of Higher Education at Tuen Mun was held today (14 January). Construction of this purpose-built campus has been supported by a HK$200 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The completion of its new premises will not only enhance the teaching environment and quality of the College, but also help boost the provision of degree places from self-financing tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and create more study pathways and continuing education opportunities.
Guests at the opening ceremony included Club Chairman Dr Anthony W K Chow; HKSAR Chief Executive the Hon Carrie Lam; Chairman of the College Board of Governors Dr Kong Ho-pak; Vice- Chairman Dr Lee Cho-jat; Governor of Hong Kong Chu Hai Education Foundation Liu Xiaoyong; College Benefactor Dr Charles Yeung; Chairman of College Council Professor Tsui Lap-chee; and College President Professor Lee Chack-fan.
Dr Chow observed that in addition to the new main campus providing a better teaching and learning environment and facilities, the Collegeˇ¦s first student hostel would allow students from different cultural backgrounds to live together and learn from each other, and thereby contribute to their holistic development. ˇ§Young people are our future, so the Club is dedicated to supporting youth development and education. The Club will continue to support the development of tertiary education in Hong Kong, in order to facilitate the development of Hong Kong into an Asian education hub.ˇ¨
The new campus houses two major buildings with a total gross floor area of 32,000 square metres, of which the academic building has been named the Jockey Club Academic Tower. Its facilities include auditoriums, a media production studio, laboratories, an indoor gymnasium and library. Also on the new campus are student hostel and staff quarters providing 190 hostel places, which are expected to directly benefit over 4,000 students each year starting from 2020.
The Jockey Club has always given high priority to supporting the development of youth and education. Over the past decade, it has donated nearly HK$5 billion to the education sector, including support for campus construction and development programmes at the eight UGC-funded universities and other self-financing institutions. It has also supported various educational programmes to foster students' innovative thinking, encouraging them to connect with the community and give back to society.
