Jockey Club supports CityU in building new tower to promote .One Health・

A ceremony was held today (2 March) to mark the commencement of structure works for the Jockey Club One Health Tower at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU). The tower is funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club with an approved donation of HK$500 million from its Charities Trust, the Trust・s largest-ever donation to CityU. The tower will serve as an education and research base for veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences under the concept of .One Health・.

Officiating guests at the ceremony included Club Chairman Philip Chen, Club Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, CityU・s Council Chairman Lester Huang and CityU・s President Professor Way Kuo.

The .One Health・ approach recognises that the health of humans, animals and their shared environment are interconnected, as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and SARS in 2003 have shown. The Jockey Club One Health Tower will be home to the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences which, through multidisciplinary collaboration, seeks to further develop the .One Health・ concept and help prevent and control infectious diseases.

Mr Chen said that in the wake of SARS the Club funded the establishment of the Centre for Health Protection which has been in the news for the last year or so. :During this COVID-19 pandemic, the Club has funded a billion Hong Kong dollars for immediate relief measures and resilience building for the society,; he said. :With this new building and College, I am sure that together we can make Hong Kong more prepared for future crises and public health concerns.;

The 15-storey Jockey Club One Health Tower, with floor space of over 24,000 square metres, will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research. There will also be a 1,600-seat multi-function auditorium and an all-weather indoor track which will be connected to the CityU hillside trail. It is targeted for completion in 2023.

Since 1994, the Trust has supported a number of CityU projects, including the establishment of student hostels offering over 2,800 hostel places. In recent years, the Trust-initiated CoolThink@JC project has been collaborating with CityU, The Education University of Hong Kong and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to strengthen upper primary students・ computational thinking abilities.
