Jockey Club¡¦s ¡§The Big Eight ¡V Dinosaur Revelation¡¨ showcases rare fossil skeletons
¡§The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Big Eight ¡V Dinosaur Revelation¡¨, the latest exhibition in the long-running series, brings to the city eight rare specimens of the most iconic fossil skeletons from the golden age of dinosaurs. Seven will be on display in Hong Kong for the first time. Exclusively sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, this exhibition is one of many initiatives supported by the Club¡¦s approved donation of HK$630 million to the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. ¡§The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Big Eight ¡V Dinosaur Revelation¡¨ starts on 8 July at the Hong Kong Science Museum.
Club Steward Lester Huang joined the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of HKSAR Kevin Yeung, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Vincent Liu, Chairman of the Museum Advisory Committee Stanley Wong, Museum Director of the Hong Kong Science Museum Paulina Chan and other guests in officiating at the exhibition¡¦s opening ceremony today (5 July).
Since its launch in 2012, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series has brought an array of world-class masterpieces from different places and times to the city. Club Steward Lester Huang said, ¡§The Club is dedicated to building a culturally vibrant Hong Kong, enriching lives and promoting social inclusion. I hope this exhibition will enable visitors to learn about recent paleontological discoveries; and raise awareness about global issues, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, through diverse educational activities.¡¨
¡§The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Big Eight ¡V Dinosaur Revelation¡¨ is a large-scale dinosaur exhibition following the well-received ¡§The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs¡¨ in 2013. Jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the First Initiative Foundation (FIF), and co-organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum and the FIF, the exhibition showcases precious fossil specimens from museums and organisations in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and Morocco.
Five of the skeletons − the Triceratops, Allosaurus, Hesperosaurus, Diplodocus and Tyrannosaurus ¡V are constructed from original fossils and reconstructed bones. The Spinosaurus and Hatzegopteryx are 1:1 reconstructed skeleton models with their original bones being displayed in showcases next to the skeletons. The exhibition includes a baby sauropod displayed in its original buried status. Except for the Tyrannosaurus, the other seven fossil skeletons are being displayed in Hong Kong for the first time.
To enhance visitors¡¦ experience, the showcase features immersive settings, multimedia programmes and interactive exhibits to enable visitors to better understand the behaviour of dinosaurs and the latest scientific discoveries.
