Whyte Captures the International Jockeysˇ¦ Champion 2002

LOCAL hero, Douglas Whyte, captured the fifth renewal of the all-star Hong Kong International Jockeys' Championship at Happy Valley today (11 December 2002, Wednesday) to add another milestone in his fine career.

Whyte, who has twice been champion in Hong Kong, got the better of German champion Andreas Suborics with a smooth victory in the third and final leg.

Eleven champions, including Frankie Dettori, Damien Oliver from Australia and Edgar Prado, the winner machine from America, graced the unique circuit but it was the South African-born Whyte who stole their thunder.

Going into the final leg, the race to win the HK$200,000 first prize was wide open with Suborics and Japan's Yutake Take sharing first place on 12 points. Peslier was close behind on 10 and Whyte in fourth on seven. The John Size-trained Danehill Warrior came to Whyte's aid with a facile success in the final leg.

A thrilled Whyte said: "This one of the highlights of my career, especially as it is my first meeting back after a rough period, in which I have been banned for seven racing days. It is very different from winning a seasonal championship but it ranks up there."

"It is also huge for Hong Kong. I have had bad luck in this championship before and I really wanted to prove myself on the International stage. I was confident about Danehill Warrior in the last leg but my other rides had to be up to their best and thankfully they were."

For once the great Frankie Dettori, who has twice won this Championship, had to take a backseat - finishing ninth on two points - but he joked: "It was a different look at life in behind. I've never really got used to that!"

Introduction

The International Jockeys' Championship Races at Happy Valley is always a special night. Set for Wednesday, December 11, this is where Hong Kong fans can enjoy a carnival of racing that is as generously sprinkled with fireworks as champion riders.

While the International Races attract top horses from all corners of the globe, the International Jockeys' Championship Races brings in champions from Europe, America, Asia, Australia and South Africa is every bit as unique and successful. The IJCR works well as something to whet the appetite ahead of the International Races. It is an opportunity to see the best jockeys in the world competing on horses not familiar to them at Happy Valley, one of the most unique circuits they may ever encounter. This is the fifth year of the IJCR and previous winners include Olivier Peslier ('98) and Frankie Dettori ('99 and '01).

The jockeys are randomly allocated their mounts in a draw and the winner will be the one accumulating the most points during three races. Points scoring works as follows: for each of the three races there are 12 points awarded to the winning jockey; six points to the first runner-up, four points to the second runner-up; three points to the fourth and two points to the fifth. The champion is the jockey with the highest total points. His reward will be HK$200,000 for the night's work with $100,000 going to second place. In the event of a tie, the jockey who has the most number of higher point-earning places receives the prize.

These men are the real Princes of the Sport of Kings. Don't miss the chance to see them in action.
