Derby History

Chinese Derby glories

The first Chinese owner to win the Derby was Ho Kam Tong, who seized victory with President Hall in 1929. Before Hong Kong racing turned professional, leading local jockey Kenny Kwok won the Derby on Clonfeckle in 1950 to become the first Chinese rider to land the race. Apart from Oriental Express and Olympic Express, his Derby runners included Stellar Express (8th in 1995), Mr Vitality (9th in 1996) and Housemaster (2nd in 2000).
