About the disastrous fire of 1918
On 26th February 1918, while the crowd were cheering for the Derby Day racing, a fire broke out in the temporary matshed stands devoured more than 600 lives. The food stalls beneath the collapsed bamboo-supported matshed might be responsible for the outbreak. With flames fanned by strong winds in the dry weather, it burned down everything rapidly like being in a horror film. The fire disaster was one causing the highest casualties in Hong Kong History.
